Fortunately, such a scholar exists, one whose knowledge of the Spanish capital is matched by a profound comprehension of Albéniz's life and music, a comprehension cultivated over three decades of painstaking and groundbreaking research. Especially welcome in this chapter is the attention devoted to Clementina Albéniz, the composer's highly accomplished sister, who was herself a talented musician, one who gave Albéniz his first instruction in piano and later became a teacher at the Escuela de Institutrices of the Asociación para la Educación de la Mujer, a major educational institution for women.

Bibliografia [Diploma, Associ a tion des Bibliothèques et Bibliothécaires Suisses, 1993], to which, despite its shortcomings, Dryden's examination of Leoncavallo's life and works makes a contribution in understanding one of the most important composers of the giovane scuola: its enthusiasm awakens interest in bringing more of the composer's work to the stage; the primary sources uncovered provide a foundation for future studies; and the findings, whether solid or problematic, open new paths of research.

[...] I approached his autobiography with real interest and curiosity. In the final chapter of the memoir, entitled "Ruminations," he summarizes: "In my effort to create substantial works that have a strong musical profile and an elegance of construction, I have attempted to contribute something unique to the repertoire of various genres and to dispel the latent belief that a black composer is incapable of producing music that extends beyond a racial divide" (p. 177).
