  • While the AME is doctrinally Methodist, clergy, scholars, and laypersons have written important works, which demonstrate the distinctive theology and praxis as defined by the Wesleyans. Bishop Benjamin W. Arnett, in an address to the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions, reminded the audience of the presence of Blacks in the formation of Christianity. Bishop Benjamin T. Tanner wrote in 1895 in The Color of Solomon, who the bible says was Black, in the book of Solomon, the first chapter; biblical scholars wrongly portrayed the son of David as being White.

  • The Society of Biblical Literature will hold its annual meeting in New Orleans from Saturday to Tuesday. The New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau could not immediately provide an attendance figure.

  • The late pope's theology of the body has been subjected to a variety of strong criticisms from biblical scholars (in terms of his exegesis of Genesis), systematic theologians (as an account of God, Christ, and the church), and social scientists (again, by those working in gender studies). Many are unpersuaded by the attempt to offer, through problematic biblical exegesis and ontological speculation, a theological basis for traditional gender roles, the moral prohibitions of Humanae vitae, and the subordination of women.

  • The book's unusual character, on either level, lies in KugePs juxtaposition of two kinds of interpretation: that of the earliest Jewish and Christian interpreters, which he has already covered at length in The Bible as It Was and The Traditions of the Bible, and that of modern biblical scholars. What made them the Bible, however, was their definitive reinterpretation. ..a way of reading that was established in Judaism in the form of the Oral Torah... its true meaning is not the original meaning of its constituent parts, but the meaning it had for the people who first saw it as the Bible, God's great book of instruction.

  • Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, anthro-pologist/linguist, provides one of the most potent lectures he has ever delivered on Kemetic (Egyptian) contributions and the need for people of Afrikan descent to evolve their consciousness As many attempt to find their Afrikan spirituality and personality, see how documentarian Thomas Alien Harris travels to Afrika and Brazil to do just that. Pastor, Dr Ray Hagins, behavioral scientist, delivers one of the most controversial religious lectures that could turn the Christian world upside down: "The Nicea Conference - The creation of Jesus Christ." Devout Christians are asked not to attend this class. Also, we will look at David Robinson, son of Jackie Robinson, and his vital work in Afrika. • Many of the church fathers were deeply shaped by the Stoic view of moral order, which some of them learned even before they encountered Christian faith; and Thomas Aquinas incorporated the "pagan" philosophy of Aristotle in creating his system of natural-law ethics, the foundation of Catholic moral theology for seven centuries. [...] it isn't difficult to imagine how a person can be so committed to free markets and minimal government that he erroneously discerns an antitax message in Catholic moral theology, and thereby engages in the error biblical scholars call "eisegesis," reading into someone else's position what you want to find there.

  • The National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools states on its Web site that it aims to "bring a state certified (sic) Bible course (elective) into the public high schools nationwide." The council claims that its curriculum is in place in 532 school districts in 38 states. (The NCBCPS doesn't release specifics, so this claim is difficult to verify.) In its literature, the council echoes other Eurocentric groups' concerns over the U.S.'s increasing diversity. "There has been a great social regression since the Bible was removed from our schools," the group claims in its justification of the legality of its cause. "We need to refer to the original documents that inspired Americanism and our religious heritage. NCBCPS founder Elizabeth Ridenour was a Greensboro-based paralegal w...

  • This is in response to Chuck MenyOs April 17 Community Comment, OCreating the Kingdom of God,O wherein he questions the reasoning of those claiming to know GodOs will, particularly regarding abortion. Rightly, Meny reminds us of the danger in trying to discern for ourselves the true meaning of scripture, lest heresies arise. He states the laity should Olisten to biblical scholars whose job it is to study and determine the genuine sayings and words of Jesus.O To this end, I refer the reader to the works of Ravi Zacharias, John MacArthur, Alistair Begg, John Piper and other prominent theologians.
