The New York Times story that all but accuses Pope Benedict XVI of dereliction of duty in not defrocking a priest who abused up to 200 deaf children decades ago is a clear sign the once-mighty newspaper has succumbed to the tabloid mentality pervading much of the media. It's an old story. The Rev. Lawrence Murphy abused victims between 1950 and 1974 while at a school for the deaf. It took more than 20 years for Archbishop Rembert Weakland, a notorious abuser, to ask the Holy See to act against Murphy.
By this time, he was no longer functioning as a priest, but dying in a hospital. Since Murphy's abusing days were clearly over and the prognosis was he would be dead in a matter of months, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now the pope, decided there was no point in doing anything. The priest soo...

In a syndicated column we published on today's op-ed page, liberal writer E. J. Dionne of the Washington Post Writers Group opines that there's a definite conservative slant in the media.
We pause now, while you clean up the coffee you just spit out.

IN THE Oct. 25 Gazette, I put forth the proposition that there is no pervasive liberal bias in the news media. I bolstered my opinion with examples of media coverage of everything from the press' kid- glove treatment of the president after a news conference, to its relatively weak coverage of his lie about warrantless eavesdropping.
I received several responses. Only two were negative. Both referred me to a book which they claimed demonstrates a liberal bias in the media. It is Bernard Goldberg's "Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distorts the News.

David Brock, the conservative turned liberal advocate, has recently garnered a considerable amount of press coverage for his attacks on Fox News for, among many other things, allegedly taking over leadership of the Republican Party. What the news coverage has ignored is his use of tax-free funds for his organization, Media Matters for America (MMA), for these attacks - a form of government support for activities that clearly do not merit tax-exempt status and that as a result infringe on Fox News' First Amendment rights.
MMA was originally established as an Internal Revenue Service Section 501(c)(3) organization, that is, an organization that can receive tax-deductible contributions to engage in educational activities. The more precise purpose was to counter alleged media bias and so to...

* In the last week I have seen and heard complaints about the liberal bias in the media from the radio, newspaper, TV, the Internet and a magazine. I wonder if conservatives understand the concept of irony?
* It's just like a Christian to say the Old Testament is myth, but somehow the New Testament is not. How convenient.

You alone are responsible for the news you consume. If I have only a few moments of your time, that's the message I want to drive home.
You can talk about bias in the media, shortcomings among news staffs, fragmentation of audience, conspiracy theories and the boogey man, but at the end of the day, it's nobody else's responsibility to decide for you what is true, what is propaganda and what is opinion. You alone are responsible for the news you consume.

Study after study after study detailed the harmful effects of tobacco smoke over the decades, yet some doggedly denied the truth staring them in the eyes.
How many studies will it take before the mainstream media's liberal bias is seen for what it is?

Mainstream fringe
Media Matters, a liberal organization that tracks conservative bias in the media, gathered like-minded advocacy group leaders Thursday to discuss how the right-wing media had "mainstreamed the fringe.

Remember O'[Reilly]'s white tower comments on lack of established news coverage of the Black community? As reported in the April 14, 2005, Amsterdam News: "AfricanAmericans should get off the defensive," said O'Reilly to a predominantly Black audience during a panel discussion at the Rev. [Al Sharpton]'s National Action Network Conference on 'Bias in the Media.' Because the media is apathetic, O'Reilly said, They don't want to go into the crack houses... they don't want to get down and dirty...'"Huh?
Remember last year when O'Reilly disrespected the legendary Harry Belafonte in the wake of his pointed antiGeorge W. Bush remarks? Remember 2003, when O'Reilly skewered Belafonte for sounding on Colin Powell and Condi Rice? O'Reilly called him "that Belafonte guy"-minimizing the singer/acto...
