Paramount Pictures planning Beverly Hills Cop IV - Brief Article
I'm a product of the '80s. Film and musical tastes both stem from all I absorbed during that decade. And if you're between the ages of 35 and 45, you've seen all of the classic teen movies, right? Wrong! At least one friend, also a devout '80s fan, has never seen one of the greatest films of our generation. Jenny, I'm hoping this inspires you to see 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Fast Times" has a certain je ne sais quoi. It moves at a different pace and focuses on a wide array of characters. And the roles epitomize classmates I've known for decades. It also launched, or solidified, numerous careers. My first column for On magazine was about "The Anniversary Party" co-starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Phoebe Cates. I was drawn to that film due to my admiration for them in "Fast...
BEVERLY HILLS - For a former cop who has appeared publicly in drag, City Councilman Dennis Zine would seem almost insusceptible to embarrassment. But on Thursday night, the San Fernando Valley councilman saw his life stripped to the funny bone at what has become one of the year's most anticipated Los Angeles political events.
B's" concerts are extraordinary. Her records are exciting ("to the left, to the left"). Her acting is commendable. And who could ever forget that Academy Awards shows in which Beyoncé sang not one, not two, but three of the five nominated songs! Eminem has a number of years to thrive in rap, and it's easy to imagine him producing after that train has reached its final destination. He can also further explore acting. He was good in "8 Mile," although for the most part the movie made Detroit seem worse than it actually is, just as those "Beverly Hills Cop" movies did. In "8 Mile" Detroit looked dark and foreboding. Another rapper with outstanding acting skills is Mos Def. There is no way to take in his performances in films such as "Monster's Ball," "Lackawanna Blues," "Brown Sugar" and ...
NEC performed plays by [Douglas Turner Ward] such as "Happy Endings" and "Day of Absence," Lonnie Elder's "Ceremonies in Dark Old Men," Peter Weiss' "Song of the Lusitanian Bogey" (directed by Michael Schultz), "Summer of the Seventeenth Doll," and "God Is a Guess What. Ms. [Hattie Winston] appeared in made-for-television movies and miniseries such as "Saving Grace," "The Cherokee Kid," "Common Ground" and "Hollow Image." Among her feature films are Quentin Tarentino's "Jackie Brown," "Beverly Hills Cop III," "True Crimes," and Clara's Heart" with Whoopi Goldberg. She also appeared in Miramax's "The Battle of Shaker Heights." I have been very, very fortunate. Recently, I was singing in my cabaret act and Michael Learned came to cheer me on. Michael is a friend and someone who I worked...
It's not stealing," protests NYPD detective Paul Hodges as he readies for his "performance" interrogating a suspect. "It's called homage. Since he's played by comic Tracy Morgan (TV's "30 Rock"), homage is mispronounced. Since the movie is "Cop Out," the "homage" is to '80s cop movies -- a fond remembrance of those jokey, bloody "Beverly Hills Cop" / "Lethal Weapon" romps of Eddie and Mel.
The third of 10 children, Wayans began his career as a regular on "Saturday Night Live" before taking on big-screen supporting roles alongside comic greats like Eddie Murphy in "Beverly Hills Cop," Steve Martin in "Roxanne" and his big brother Keenen Ivory Wayans in "Hollywood Shuffle" and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." He would later team with his brother again as a writer and co-star on the Emmy Award-winning FOX comedy series "In Living Color. It's basically a smorgasbord of comedy and we have one sequence which is a puppet reality show, as if the puppet is really real, and he wants to be an actor in Hollywood. He has a little puppet porn site where he makes his money. We have "Nice Man" - he's a killer, but he kills whenever he's in an embarrassing situation, like if someone sees him p...
She left school to tour with the "Ordettes" as they worked the nightclubs, truck stops and the "chitlin' circuit" (smaller venues that would accommodate Black entertainers). Eventually the group auditioned for Blue Note Records and was almost passed up because their lead singer ([]) did not possess the traditional traits that the president was looking for. But after hearing her sing, he changed his mind focusing on substance (her talent) rather than fluff (a superficial evaluation). The group then became known as the "Bluebelles" and [Patricia Louise Holt] (LaBelle was still using her birth name up to that time) thereafter became known as "." That last name meant "the beautiful" in French and together, she and the group became known as " and the Bl...

This eccentric quintet might have remained top- secret were it not for the arrival of a giant alien robot which violently rejects the friendly overtures of the President (Stephen Colbert), the Close Encounters notes segueing into "Axel's Theme" from Beverly Hills Cop. Monster-minder General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland with a hilarious gruff Southern accent) volunteers his motley crew to battle the robot, and [Susan Murphy] (now dubbed "Ginormica") proves her mettle, with strategic assists from her kooky cohorts, in a frantic showdown in San Francisco. But Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson), the powercrazed alien behind the robot invasion, doesn't give up the fight so easily. Though the stop-motion Coraline beat it to theatres, is billed as the "first film totally authored i...
Then there is Gil Hill, who ran for City Council in the early 90s after appearing in all three "Beverly Hills Cop" movies. Hill played Inspector Douglass Todd, the rough cop who often exchanged words with one of the film's stars, Eddie Murphy. Wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura served one term as governor of Minnesota. Actor/bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzennegger is currently governor of California. R&B singer Jerry Butler, actor/director Clint Eastwood and late singer Sonny Bono have also held political office. And we could not leave out Ronald Reagan, the actor who became governor of California and then president of the United States. The biggest advantage is that you have a role model," Bell said, "You have someone in your family who has been successful in their career. My mother hap...
