• Pilot Club Aids Ronald Mcdonald House

By Ben Calwell bcalwell@cnpapers.com 304-348-5188 Thanks to a group of civic-minded ladies, it was taco night recently at the Ronald McDonald House of Southern West Virginia. The women, members of the Pilot Club of Greater Kanawha Valley, visit the Ronald McDonald House once a month to prepare a meal for its residents, who stay there to be near their hospitalized children. The monthly meals are just one of many community service projects in which the club is involved. Last fall, the Pilot Club of Greater Kanawha Valley also donated a Wii video game console to the Ronald McDonald House for its residents to use. • Humane Society Fling Nets $30k

The Portsmouth Humane Society's Fur Ball was a tail-wagging success as more than 250 dogs and their owners took over the second floor of the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel last month. With the help of corporate sponsors, the event raised more than $30,000 for the Humane Society's new building, scheduled to open later this year. Dogs - some dressed to the hilt, some in their birthday suits - posed for pictures and had their paws read. Willing dogs were allowed to dine with their humans . Those pets less inclined were invited to separate quarters where they and their like-minded four- legged friends could take a break from all the excitement.
