Mr. McGee's letter (Readers' Forum, Feb. 21) is correct in stating that evolution is a theory. His definition, however, is the common, rather than the scientific one. In science, a theory is the best explanation for natural occurrences, events, etc. based on the available evidence. The theory of evolution is the major framework for the biological sciences because it is the best explanation of how the natural functions of life on this planet work and interact based on all the available evidence. It cannot, by its very nature, address questions such as whether or not there is a Creator or a purpose for the world. Those are "supernatural" questions. Most forms of creationism are not scientific but seek to explain the origin of the world by supernatural means and reconcile physical evidence...
