MILFORD - Betty Sleight passed away Nov. 24, 2011, at a Bangor nursing care facility. She was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Lubec, daughter of William E. Baker and Jane (Higgins) Baker. She graduated from Lubec High School as valedictorian of her class in 1945, and from Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., in 1949. After college she worked at the Institute of Living, Hartford, Conn., and then at Stamford Day Nursery, Stamford, Conn. Prior to her marriage, she and her college roommate, Jan McCutcheon, boarded the Queen Elizabeth and traveled to England, Scotland and France. In 1951 she married Charles K. Sleight, also of Lubec. After residing for several years in Calais, they moved to Milford, where they built a home and raised three children. Betty taught at the Dr. Lewis S. Libby elementary school...

I'm probably not explaining this very well. Hard to put into words the way that day makes you feel -- that first-day-of-spring feeling. When you recall, catching a whiff of new grass, that nature has smells other than "icy." It's that first time you've run outside and forgotten your coat and realized, all at once, it doesn't matter.

Joseph Pelissari once got to play Mr. Mom, sort of. "When my daughter (Christina Kozlowski of East Haddam) was 6 months old, I went back to work," said his wife of 44 years, Marlis "Lisa" Pelissari. "My husband and I worked different shifts; I worked days and he worked nights. He actually was a better mom than me to our daughter, and was very patient with her. But he had absolutely no sense of fashion. When she was about a year old, he brought her to my job at lunchtime to say hello, and he had dressed her in a red skirt, green tights and a striped shirt. She looked like a Roller Derby player. Pelissari died March 27 at age 70.
