We're all children of our histories. Some of us become victims, others reactors and rebels. Some of us just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Commemorations, celebrations and memorials become important, documenting what is, what was and what might have been. Germany commemorates the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall this week. That wall wasn't as lengthy as the Great Wall of China, nor did it have the mythic significance of the wall that Joshua's trumpet brought down at Jericho. But the Berlin Wall marks a significant milestone in the history of the Cold War, when a supposedly civilized nation locked in its people and described the barrier, in Orwellian rhetoric every government bureaucrat could envy, as an "anti-fascist protection rampart.
LOS ANGELES - She was born on the west side of the Berlin Wall. He was born on the east side. But artists Jasmin Siddiqui and Falk Lehmann worked side-by-side for days to paint a poignant 12-foot-tall reminder of the Cold War on a chunk of the Berlin Wall that stands next to Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.
BERLIN - With concerts and memorials Germans today will celebrate the day the Berlin Wall came crashing down 20 years ago. On that cold night, they danced atop the wall, arms raised in victory, hands clasped in friendship and giddy hope. Years of separation and anxiety melted into the unbelievable reality of freedom and a future without border guards, secret police, informers and rigid communist control.
BERLIN -- Ulrich Sauff and his wife stared at the mammoth domino pieces marking the path where the Berlin Wall once stood and reminisced about life in the barrier's shadow. It was like a prison," said Sauff, 73, who lived on the western side of the wall. "For us 'Wessis,' the few kilometers from our old home to our new home (in the East) was unthinkable.
SAN BERNARDINO - Two segments of the Berlin Wall arrived recently in the Inland Empire. One is destined to be displayed in northern Ronald Reagan Park. The second is at the heart of an unusual dispute between East Valley Republicans over who has the right to possess the wall segment.

Twenty years ago, Natalia Spektor stood at a hotel registration desk in Italy when a radio in the lobby broadcast news that the Berlin Wall was coming down. Tired from three weeks of traveling -- from her native Ukraine, through Austria, enroute to the United States -- Spektor, a Russian Jew, was shocked to hear that the communist barrier would open for the first time since 1961. She carried only two suitcases of belongings and had just $105 worth of Russian rubles in her pocket, but she could not have been happier.

For a President who has played golf more than any other sitting U.S. President, taxpayer dollars to fly to Copenhagen plead for holding the Olympics in Chicago, and to go on date nights to New York City, it's strange he didn't bother to visit Berlin November 9 for the 20th anniversary of fall of the Berlin Wall - a historic that crystallized the failures of Socialist governments. Conservatives showed their support for our troops through an activity called the "Security Wake-Up Call," which encouraged students to put leaflets under dorm room doors explaining that it is the United States military that guarantees them a peaceful night's sleep.
