There continue to be many who demand that we start profiling at our airports. But what does profiling do? It tells us that within a certain group of people, there is a higher probability of there being a terrorist. It does not tell us who the next terrorist is. So how do the Israelis make their Ben Gurion International Airport safe? They get from profiling to a safe airport by interrogating every passenger entering the airport. When Boston's Logan airport considered using the Israeli method, officials realized that it would not work. This is because, first, Ben Gurion Airport patently stereotypes Arabs. Second, if every passenger were interrogated at Logan, no one would make his flight. Finally, civil libertarians would never approve.
The Israeli army arrested 33 Hamas political leaders in the West Bank, including Nasser Shaer, the Palestinian Authority (PA) Education Minister, as well as the mayors of Nablus and Qalqilya and members of parliament. The Israeli Ministry of Communications shut down a Palestinian pirate radio station in the West Bank which, through transmission interference, had been causing pilots at Ben Gurion International Airport to hear music rather than control tower instructions over the radio.
JERUSALEM - A performer with the renowned Alvin Ailey dance troupe was ordered to perform steps for Israeli airport security officers to convince them of his identity, a spokesman for the company said. Abdur-Rahim Jackson was singled out from other members of the black American dance ensemble when they arrived at Ben-Gurion International Airport on Sunday night at the start of a six-nation international tour, said publicist Shauli Baskin.
Pope Benedict XVI ended his controversial pilgrimage to the Holy Land on Friday by appealing to Israelis, Palestinians and all the people of the Middle East to "break the vicious circle of violence" and let a two-state solution become a reality. Speaking to Israeli President Shimon Peres at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport before he left for Rome, the 82-year- old German pontiff said he wanted to put on record that "I came to visit this country as a friend of the Israelis, just as I am a friend of the Palestinian people. Friends enjoy spending time in one another's company, and they find it deeply distressing to see one another suffer.
Israel's nightmare is that if hostilities do break out once more, most likely if it launches pre-emptive strikes against Iran's nuclear infrastructure, the Jewish state's cities will come under an unprecedented bombardment from Hizbullah in the north, Hamas in the south, Syria in the east, as well as Iran. Lebanon's Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah addresses his supporters through a giant video screen during an event marking the second anniversary of the assassination of military commander lmad Moughniyah In Beirut's suburbs February 16, 2010.
