A report revealing the first decline in consumer spending since the Great Recession shocked Wall Street investors Tuesday and raised fears that the economy could fall into a double-dip recession.
The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 266 points to below 12,000, capping an 858-point loss in its longest losing streak since the 2008 financial crisis. Investors ignored Washington's swift enactment of a long-fought debt reduction deal and zeroed in on the increasingly dicey outlook for the economy. The Standard & Poor's 500 index of blue-chip stocks fell 2.6 percent and erased its gains for the year. Gold and U.S. Treasury bond prices soared as investors dived into safe havens.

Restaurant operators reported softer same-store sales and traffic levels; Operators' outlook for the economy fell to a two-year low
WASHINGTON, June 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As a result of softer same-store sales and traffic levels and an erosion of optimism among restaurant operators, the outlook for the restaurant industry softened in May. The National Restaurant Association's Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 99.9 in May, down 1.0 percent from April's level. May represented the first time in six months that the RPI stood below 100, which signifies contraction in the index of key industry indicators.

Speaking of action, lunch yielded to the video-assisted progress reports from the 40 Below Task Forces, formed last spring at a 40 Below midterm report at Armory Square's Ambrosia, to find concrete ways to address the ideas and concerns that came out of the inaugural summit. Unfortunately, most of the reports languished in the future tense, with promises from the various task force leaders: "We will soon formally incorporate as a 501 (c) 3." "It's about to get a lot more real." "We're planning an arts walk with the Syracuse Symphony.
You tell a businessperson that the arts breed better readers in our schools," said Arthur Brooks, associate professor of public administration at SU, "and they say, 'Well, what would happen if we just dumped that money into reading programs?'" Said Lou Mu...

At the Jemez River, East Fork, Guadalupe and San Antonio, the upper streams are starting to ice up and winter fishing has arrived. From now until spring the best bet is to fish the Jemez River below Battleship Rock. Fly fishing is good with caddis, terrestrials, stimulators and bead-headed nymphs. Panther Martins, Power Bait or worms are also working. Flow on the Jemez River is 28 cfs (cubic feet per second).
