A volunteer effort to build a track for Belle Vernon Area School District athletes and the community has progressed to a steady sprint. What was a fledgling campaign launched last year by Fellsburg couple Mike and Judy Brewer to build a track facility has moved much closer to a reality.
Stephen V. Russell has a pretty good idea of what he'll be doing when the 2012-2013 term begins next August in the Belle Vernon Area School District. I'll probably sleep in, at least until six or seven o'clock," Russell said with a smile. "I've always looked forward to the first day of school with excitement and the anticipation of setting goals and making the educational process something that will benefit our students.
Since the inception of computer-based charter schools, public schools have faced the challenge of students leaving their districts and the associated costs of such desertions. Belle Vernon Area School District recently received its bill for students who left their district. It was near $280,000.
Belle Vernon Area School District will hold fall kindergarten registration on Tuesday at Rostraver Elementary School and Wednesday at Marion Elementary School. Times on both days will be 8:30-11 a.m. for last names A-M and noon-2:30 p.m. for last names N-Z. Sessions will include orientation activities, readiness and speech screenings and picture-taking for photo IDs.
The timing was right for the Belle Vernon Area School District to establish a multiuse facility. The school board had debated building a new bus garage. Meanwhile, the athletic department wanted more space and better training facilities.
Rostraver Elementary School has partnered with California University of Pennsylvania to help young students think inventively. Cal U professors and Belle Vernon Area School District teachers have worked together to introduce elementary school students to Camp Invention.

Johnson challenged the graduates to "find new ways to stimulate the love of learning and the capacity for creation. Today, more than 42 years after that signature address in Ann Arbor, those words, and others from Johnson's Great Society speech, ring loud and clear as a mandate for students at Bellmar Middle School in the Belle Vernon Area School District.
Belle Vernon Area School District will owe a smaller contribution to the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center's operating budget next school year. The school board learned last night that the vocational school's proposed budget will cost Belle Vernon Area about $624,000, director Aaron Bialon said. That is a decrease of about $80,000.
Long before they evolved into what is now the Belle Vernon Area School District, five high schools existed in that area. Each town had its own high school, Fayette City, Marion in Fairhope, Belle Vernon on Market Street, North Belle Vernon on Graham Street, and Rostraver in Pricedale," said Perry Swartz, a 1940 graduate of North Belle Vernon High School. "Can you imagine that? Five schools in that rather small area, and that meant five football teams, five bands, five choruses and five valedictorians. Everyone had his own identity. Now the kids have a tendency to get lost in the shuffle in the big schools.
Two Mon Valley teachers are now among an elite class of educators recognized as the top in Pennsylvania. Marsha L. (Shosky) Ferrara, an elementary teacher in the Belle Vernon Area School District, and Barbara Pepper, an elementary teacher in the Charleroi Area School District, were both recently recognized for completing the Department of Education National Board Certification program.
