Even before George Harris announced he was resigning as fairground manager, the fairground's uncertain future worried vendors who had the property booked for events as far as three years in advance. Coincidentally, one of those events is the annual draft horse and mule sale that Harris runs as part of his Heartland Management Co.
Another regular vendor, Kent Sapp, has rented the fairgrounds for several years for automotive swap meets every fall and spring. Sapp has appeared at two recent county commission meetings to publicly express his concerns about the future of the fairground, pointing out that the local economic impact of nearly year-round operation of the fairground brings in tens to hundreds of millions of revenue for restaurants, hotels and other businesses.
