First came fresh produce, then vino -- and now suds. Five years to the day it opened Vizcarra Vineyards, Becker Farms will celebrate its budding microbrewery business with a kick-off event today from 6 p.m. to midnight on the Quaker Road farm.

For those who prefer the grain to the grape, Becker Farms is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its Vizcarra Vineyards by launching four custom beers from its new Becker Brewing Company. The launch party is from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday at Becker Farms in Gasport. The celebration includes a $15 barbecue dinner, including beer or wine, or $5 for a Becker Brewing pint glass filled with Local Lager, Rooster Red, Art's Amber or Frank's Summer Gold. Designated drivers get the dinner for half price and free non- alcoholic beverages.

Ruth Hall is not surprised when people ask for the secret to her pie crust. Her flour-dusted fingers shape about 7,000 pies a year at Becker Farms in Gasport, working four days a week with two skilled helpers. Her thumb scallops the edge of each raspberry, peach, blueberry and apple pie to seal in the juices. Over 40 years, customers have taken home more than 200,000 of Hall's flaky-topped confections, enhancing Thanksgiving celebrations and Sunday dinners alike.

There's a saying the Greeks have for marveling at someone's cooking accomplishment: "Bless your hands." That occurred to me last week as I had the privilege of watching Ruth Hall, above, make pie. She's flouring the canvas cover to her rolling pin, one of the genuinely pro tips that she says really helps roll out crust without adding so much flour. The room the 84-year-old great-grandmother works in was the kitchen when the building was a farmhouse - a kitchen where the grandmother of Becker Farms co-owner Mindy Vizcarra used to make pie herself.

The Wayne County Junior Fair Auction on Wednesday consisted of 26 items in the dairy products auction which totaled $25,245; 20 rabbit meat pens; 116 meat pens of poultry; 42 goats; and 84 lambs. The auctioneers were Dave Acker, Mark Bachus, Seth Andrews and Jake Gasser. Chris Acker and Mandy Maibach clerked the sale. The ringmen were Dave Geitgey, Jim Silver, Jake Gasser, Seth Andrews, Mark Bachus, Bob Graber, Curt Morris and Lynn Neunschwander. Sale proceeds were handled by PNC Bank.
