TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS After failing to get out of the first inning last week at Fenway Park, LHP Damian Moss was designated for assignment. In his only other start, he was perfect through three innings but ran into trouble after he made a bad throw on a bunt. The Rays returned LHP Mark Hendrickson and RHP Jeremi Gonzalez to the rotation, and LHP John Halama might start, too. To replace Moss on the roster, the club called up Class AAA RHP Dicky Gonzalez. ... The team is lacking one righty setup man.

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS WHAT WENT RIGHT: With the fastest outfield in baseball and a mostly reworked infield, the team played very good defense throughout the first half. The bullpen and the offense vastly improved after a rough start. LF Carl Crawford and 2B julio Lugo blossomed, and RHP Victor Zambrano was perfect against the Yankees (3-0) and the N.L. (2-0). WHAT WENT WRONG: The team needed several weeks to recover from its season-opening trip to Japan.

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS when Roy Sanchez signed, manager Lou Piniella said Sanchez would play shortstop and Julio Lugo would move to second, which would set up prospect B.J. Upton to eventually take over at short. But Lugo, a slick fielder with an erratic arm, is at short and Sanchez, one of the game's best defensive middle infielders, is at second. Sanchez played in an average of just more than 100 games the past two seasons, so Lugo would have played some short anyway. ...
