The movable barrier plan came from the Metropolitan Transportation Com-. mission. It gained support in the commission's Bay Area Toll Authority Oversight Committee. [Marin Supervisor Charles McGlashan] Steve Kinsey is chairman of the committee. His participation at MTC and McGlashan's at BCDC creates a pair of potent Marin advocates for the bike and pedestrian plan. The power BCDC has over projects that affect the bay makes it a critical gatekeeper in any Caltrans proposal to create a third traffic lane. "The bottom line is that I intend to take a very hard line at BCDC about public access," says McGlashan. "If Caltrans is going to propose a freeway with no [auxiliary] shoulder over that bridge, then I propose a bridge that has no shoulder but has a bike lane. It is absurd to close it o...

Each time scientists assess the consequences of sea-level rise it seems to get increasingly dire, says Sam Schuchat, executive director of the California Coastal Conservancy and chair of the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority. Schuchat says implications of sea-level ri...

GOP defeat should be inevitable It seems that millions of registered Democrats now view the Republicans as a party that wants to protect every last penny of the wealthy from the slightest pittance of an income tax increase and categorically opposes concern for the homelessness of unemployed men and women living in cars or on the streets with their children. This is even as prominent, wealthy persons have indicated they would favor paying slightly higher taxes to help get the economy moving again, get people working and thereby contributing toward ending homelessness. With the impression of heartless intransigence on the part of Republicans, defeat should be inevitable next year for the majority of GOP candidates. I believe the good people of this nation feel that homelessness should r...
