  • In the last couple of years a new technique has climbed its way to the top of the list of many anglers: the swimbait. For bass coast to coast, swimbait manufactures have designed a variety of colors and sizes to fit the everyday angler's needs. Swimbaits have been around for many years and manufacturers are designing them to match many species of forage such as trout, hitch, tilapia and so on. Tru- Tungsten has revealed the next generation of swimbaits for big bass anywhere in the country called the "Tru-Life Swimbaits. The Tru-Life swimbait ranges from the new 4- to 7-inch shad swimbait, matching tilapia and bluegill, then up to the 8-inch to 9- inch sizes for the trout series. Another feature that they are well known for is the ability to insert or remove tungsten ball weights to ma...

  • Among American sport-fishing fanatics the striped bass (aka striper or rockfish) is second only to the largemouth bass in matters of popularity. That should come as no big surprise since an adult striper of 30 to 50 pounds can make a grown man's muscles feel like Jello and turn an expensive one-piece fishing rod into a two- piecer when you least expect it. So where is the best place on the East Coast to find a tackle- busting striped bass? This time of year the honor doesn't go to the hallowed striper waters of New England, New Jersey or North Carolina. No, a broad Virginia area of the Chesapeake Bay that reaches from above the Bay Bridge-Tunnel to the edges of the Atlantic Ocean is the Holy Grail for sport anglers now and in the weeks to come.

  • When you go outside early in the day, before the sun rises, can you smell the air? Do you get the clear message that autumn is on its way, and yes, even though there still will be some warm days ahead, the nights tell the story? Cooler temperatures after sundown and throughout the night are performing minor miracles in the water. The bass can feel it, as can the rockfish and other species. The air works its magic, rejuvenating and chilling formerly lukewarm layers of salty bays and freshwater lakes or rivers - and the fishing will be quite fine. In the premier tidal bass fishing waters on the East Coast, the Potomac River, expect a steady increase of largemouth bass catches in the shallows up and down the river's bass range, which begins in the District and continues downstream to feede...

  • THE STRIPED BASS arguably is fishery management's most notable success. Once near the point of extinction along the Atlantic coast, stock numbers increased almost to record numbers after strict management that included brief moratoriums.

  • A decline in the number of striped bass swimming up the Maine coast in recent summers helped persuade regional fisheries managers this week to reject a proposed expansion of the commercial catch to the south. Sport fishermen and state officials in Maine had criticized the proposal because of signs that the striped bass population, and the state's valuable recreational fishery, may be in trouble.

  • FARMINGTON -- Samples of Lawrence Wilber's intricate works of cross-stitch are on display in the Ben Franklin Medical Library at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Wilber, 88, a former Wilton resident and hospital volunteer who now lives on the coast, started cross-stitching after he retired from G.H. Bass and Co., where he learned to stitch the hand-sewn Bass Weejuns. After stitching for Bass for 30 years, he retired early but continued to work for Bass traveling to numerous countries all over the world for another 18 years, demonstrating how the hand sewing on the Weejuns was done.

  • Redman's musical idol, Sonny Rollins' 1957 album Way Out West was the inspiration for the musical elements for "Back East" because Rollins was the first musicians who decided to use the sax, bass and drums which he cut in California with West Coast musicians. Young Redman decided to contrast Rollins perspective and return to the East Coast for his project using the same instrumentation. The area was within the vicinity of Boston and New York City. Redman also decided to explore the techniques of non-Western idioms in his rhythms, his melodic and harmonic elements. Titles in the CD Back East gave an indication that he employed such area tonalities from such titles as Indonesia, Mantra #5, India, East of the Sun, Back East and Indian Song. [Joshua Redman] continued, "The track [Dewey Redm...

  • The Corralitos-based psyche- delic hard rock band Mammatus doesn't write songs; the trio pens epics. The 12-minute, 16-second "Excellent Swordfight" begins with riffs that thrust and parry before veering into spaced-out sections. "The Coast Explodes" starts with low, trance- inducing guitar, bass and drums worthy of early Soundgarden before a battery of riffs build and crash like a Pacific winter swell during the song's mid-section. "Dragon of the Deep, Part One" goes from a tangle of wah-wah drenched guitar to a throb- bing metal section and back again over the course of eight minutes. While Mammatus 2007 shows with Acid Mothers Temple made up the trio's most recent national tour, [Nicky Emmert] says that the band's first national outing in 2005 was even more memorable. The group playe...

  • Past the unpuddled part, you'll stroll through a eucalyptus stand that contains a couple of specimens of impressive girth. Then a cliffside clearing affords (depending on fog) majestic views of the Marin and San Francisco coastline and San Francisco. It's also a fine vantage point to plop down, on the return leg, to appreciate the Pacific sunset. My most recent trip was welcomed at this point by the wheeling arcs of an osprey. These large accepters often soar above the seaside portions of this path. From the Coast Trail, the slender spur leading to Bass Lake is not marked by a sign, but it's obvious. You've been gazing at sun-sparkled water for a few minutes, and most likely hearing the hoots of happy humans. Often, folks will form arrows from sticks or rocks at this junction, poi...

  • VIRGINIA'S MOST cherished fishing season opens at a second past midnight Friday night. That would be the Chesapeake Bay Fall Striped Bass Season. It's fast action, good eating and big business on this part of the coast. Granted, the opening of fall season isn't what it was when Virginia first reopened the fishery after a brief moratorium on catches.
