The federal budget proposal for fiscal year 2009 included more than $147 billion of government spending on research and development. A significant portion of those funds will be allocated to academic and research institutions to fund basic and applied research in a variety of disciplines. The funding usually takes the form of research grants to universities and university-based researchers. However, a battle is looming in Congress over the product of these research grants. In many cases, the end result of government-funded basic research is the publication of research results in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. The issue has its political and policy genesis in the notion that government information should be freely available to the taxpayers.

Mnemonic techniques are learning strategies which can enhance learning and improve recall of the information learned. Research has proven that mnemonics are effective aids in learning new, abstract, and/or complex concepts. Most auditing courses are conceptual in nature. Students often experience difficulty understanding auditing concepts, which may appear abstract due to the students' lack of an adequate frame of reference necessary to analyze and understand these concepts. This difficulty can be attributed to students' lack of exposure to real-world accounting systems, source documentation, evidence accumulation, or report writing. Although coursework cannot provide the frame of reference achieved through work experience, accounting educators can provide students with techniques that ...

DAYTON -- Donald Klosterman hopes filaments too tiny to see will make a visible difference in Ohio's economy.
Klosterman is group leader for the University of Dayton Research Institute's Center for Basic and Applied Polymer Research. The filaments are "nanoparticles," microscopically small tubes of carbon molecules produced by Applied Sciences Inc. of Cedarville. The center is in the midst of setting up a pilot plant to produce "nanocomposite" polymers laced with the particles.
