MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Stars from the gridiron, poker world, Hollywood and the music industry put their cards on the table February 18 and 19, 2011 at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas for the first annual Texas Hold'em poker tournament Raise Your Hand for Africa. How do we understand poverty? In Memphis and Shelby County there is a historically persistent connection between being African- American and being poor. This at once introduces the specter of racism while undermining productive conversations about economic disadvantage. Yet only by abandoning such preconceptions can we develop the political will to impact this all-too-prevalent condition.
Poverty in Memphis is deep and longstanding. The poverty level (about $18,000 in annual income for a family of three) rarely goes below 20 percent locally, though the more sobering statistic is that 40 percent of our children live in such conditions. EPIC (Every Person Influences Children) will offer workshops for parents with challenges involved with the child protection system, substance abuse, emotional health issues, custody matters, domestic violence, criminal backgrounds, situations which compromise their ability to provide parental guidance that protects the basic needs of their children. Ten-week classes will be held from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays or 10 to 11:45 a.m. Fridays in the YWCA of the Tonawandas, 49 Tremont St., North Tonawanda. All classes are free. Save Africa's Children is a 501(C)(3) corporation which provides direct support to children affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty and war throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. SAC partners with American and African churches, individuals, government and corporate sectors to meet the basic needs of African children.
