The statistics outlined in these ten chapters should inspire not just the African American community, but all minority communities to begin to take action and make the necessary changes to live better lives," stated [McKinney] in a press release. "We are living in the 21st Century and it is a travesty that we [African Americans] are still facing challenges when it comes to securing basic needs for survival.

ON January 30th, New Haven took part in the first-ever statewide point-in-time homeless count. The New Haven Continuum of Care, a consortium of private and public social service providers, housing developers, formerly homeless persons, state and local officials, homeless advocates and business leaders led the local count. This was the first time that the entire state was utilizing the same methodology and conducting the count on the same day. The data will be available on a statewide, regional, and local level by the end of March. This information will not only help to demonstrate the need for retaining federal funding but also help to direct resources where they might best be served.
What amazes me, however, is that we have to advocate for what are considered basic needs for survival i...

So many of my friends and associates have so many challenges with being HIV positive I don't have HIV challenges-mine are age related challenges, high blood pressure, my hair turning gray and of course sore muscles. People say to me you always are talking about HIV but you don't even show any signs of the disease. My reply to them, that I need to be healthy so that I can help others see that we can live well with HIV.
"Telling my family wasn't an option at first. I came out to them in the same way many people come out about being same sex attracted. It goes like this, 'I have something to tell you.' I hold my breath for a minute and then I tell them and hope they don't run or scream. As time went on I faced HIV head on and came out to the world... No shame, no guilt, I'm free."

Two area homeless outreach groups would like to remind people that although the weather may be as hot as a firecracker, it's always cold for people living on the streets.
The Salt Lake Board of Realtors on behalf of The Road Home and Volunteers of America's Utah Homeless Outreach team is calling for donations to help them fulfill basic survival needs such as food, water and medical treatment for people who spend their days mostly out in the elements, no matter the season.

A narrow focus on marriage equality as a stand-alone issue may secure rights and benefits for some LGBT families, but it also places many in jeopardy. Marriage equality has come to dominate many LGBT institutional agendas and budgets, pushing aside the basic survival needs of many queer families and households for whom marriage is not the only or even most important issue, and in some cases, is neither relevant nor applicable. As Kenyon Farrow, co-editor of Letters From Young Activists: Today's Rebels Speak Out, notes, "People of color, women, and trans people don't have the luxury of just being gay. We have to look at the totality of our lives and make decisions about the total impact of our lives. Marriage will not be the thing that saves our lives. We need to work for full, universal...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Justice Department announced today that it is awarding $22 million to 116 communities to support projects that move domestic violence victims and their children into permanent housing. Awards made under this program provide assistance to victims who need transitional housing as a result of fleeing a domestic violence situation and for whom emergency shelter services or other crisis intervention services are unavailable or insufficient. The Justice Department's Office on Violence Against Women administers the Transitional Housing Assistance Grant Program.
In order for a battered woman to feel safe, her basic survival needs must be met," said Diane M. Stuart, director of the Office on Violence Against Women. "These needs include economic sel...
