DEAR SUNSPOTS: The STEP program at Lewiston High School supports the basic needs of students and families experiencing homelessness. We are taking on a very different holiday approach this year that will hopefully be easier to manage and better fit students' needs.
Our "Fill a Stocking for a Friend" project is asking community members and businesses to adopt a student, fill the stocking and grant wishes for students who may otherwise not experience Christmas this year.

Addressing the critical need to hire police officers to replace the ever-increasing number of retiring baby boomers is a challenging issue for police chiefs and recruiting supervisors. How do police departments package a law enforcement career to be more alluring to potential applicants? A search of several major city police recruitment Web sites reveals an approach that either emphasizes or exclusively promotes the basic needs of money and benefits, and the appeal of the excitement of a police career.

Over the past two decades, the multidimensional model of quality attributes that is often referred to as "Kano's theory of attractive quality" (Kano et al. 1984) has gained increasing exposure and acceptance among academics and practitioners alike. Despite this, no research has provided a systematic review of the subsequent development of this theory since its introduction. The aims of this study are: a) to synthesize and organize the extant literature on the subject; and b) to suggest areas that require further research. A review was conducted of 33 papers related to the theory of attractive quality. The content of these papers was analyzed and theoretical and methodological research themes were identified. The study revealed several interesting developments with respect to methodologi...

Dr. Erik Steele is right on the mark asking patients to help him take care of them, "I need your help taking better care of you" (BDN, Oct. 24). As patients, we must also accept responsibility for doing what we are told. Much medical treatment is less than completely successful because correct advice is not followed. Sometimes this is because the treatment is "too big a pill to swallow.
For example no one can be expected to lose 50 pounds in a week or to immediately exercise 20 to 30 minutes a day. Once a problem is identified, patients and their health care providers need to find a solution they can actually follow, ones that are not worse than the disease. This means treatments have to be individualized as much as needed while still striving to achieve the goal. Even just taking a me...

President Obama wants to use international trade policy to generate a sustainable, private-sector-led recovery, and that's a good idea. Unfortunately, to do so, he evidently needs to learn some basic economics about how exports and imports affect growth and employment. Otherwise, on balance, initiatives like his oft- repeated commitment to double U.S. exports by 2014 and his pursuit of new trade agreements won't create a penny more of output or a single new job. In fact, as indicated by the new government data for 2010, this trade-policy approach is likeliest to undermine recovery and increase the nation's already dangerous debt load.
Trade unquestionably represents a badly needed growth opportunity. With U.S. consumer and government finances shaky at best, selling more American goods ...
