As a baseball fan, I really enjoyed the recent article, "On the Road Again", which provided a wonderful insight into the life on the road of minor league umpires.

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Baseball owners unanimously ratified a five-year contract with umpires on Thursday, wrapping up a decade of labor peace in a sport once plagued by work stoppages.
The deal, expected to be ratified by umpires on Monday, would remove a ban on umpires appearing in consecutive World Series, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because umpires had yet to vote on the pact.

Paul L. Demers, a retired letter carrier in Sanford's east side and a former long-time baseball umpire in York County, died Wednesday. He was 93.
Mr. Demers was long considered the dean of southern Maine baseball umpires, having called games for nearly 46 seasons. He was a fixture on the diamond dating back to 1941, and covered baseball from the Babe Ruth League to intercollegiate and semi-professional games. Behind the plate, Mr. Demers earned the respect of coaches and players throughout the sport.

LEOMINSTER, Mass. - Robert Joseph Smith, 78, passed away suddenly Jan. 7, 2012. Bob was born Feb. 17, 1933, in Presque Isle, a son of the late Granville and Margaret Smith.
After completing high school, where he placed second and third in the state track meet for javelin and discus, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., and Fort Hood, Texas. After an honorable discharge he returned to complete his education at Aroostook State Teachers College. He graduated in 1961, becoming the first male to graduate with a degree in physical education. After teaching a year in the Limestone school system Bob became the first physical education teacher at Skyway Middle School and remained for 26 years.
