Aluminum baseball bats have come under increasing scrutiny over the years because of the perception that they result in more injuries on the baseball diamond. That premise was derived from empirical data that show balls hit by aluminum bats not only go farther, in some cases, but travel up to several miles per hour faster than a ball struck by a wooden bat.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH -- For one Gayton hitter after another, getting on base turned into a dead end in Friday's Northeast Regional elimination game, and so its season met the same fate. Gayton Post 31 left 14 runners on base and fell to Whitestown, N.Y., 6-1, at The Ballpark, dropping out of of the regional after two games. Gayton finished its season at 26-3. Whitestown improved to 25-9 and will play Saturday in the double-elimination tournament.

A Fontana man was beaten and robbed for his wallet as he walked home, police said. About 7 p.m. Wednesday, the man, 41, was on Ceres Avenue, near Jurupa Avenue, when the two robbers walked up behind him and hit him with baseball bats.

Police are investigating a riot in which students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania attacked each another with shovels, cinder blocks, baseball bats and a machete. The incident was reported as "a large fight with weapons involved" at 2:18 a.m. Saturday near the Giant Eagle in the 600 block of Locust Street, said Indiana borough Patrolman Thomas Dessell. As police arrived, most of the people involved fled, Dessell said.
