• Religion and sex in the Yale dorms: a legislative proposal requiring private universities to provide religious accommodations.

Congress should pass legislation that guarantees religious accommodation to students at private universities. The United States District Court for the District of Connecticut dismissed a case filed by Yale University students who wanted religious accommodations that suited their beliefs in modesty. The Court ruled Yale University was not a state agent, as the students had claimed, and need not provide the accommodations state universities must. Anti-discrimination laws should be expanded so private universities accommodate religious belief. Legislation can be written so it does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits the state from establishing a religion.
