But it hadn't always been like that. According to Pretty for Prom, proms began in the late 180Os in the elite colleges of the Northeast. Still, some banquet halls are doing well with traditional parties. Holiday party bookings "are definitely better than last year," said Kristie Pappas, senior corporate sales manager at The Palace, a banquet hall in the Somerset section of Franklin.
The economic slump has more companies cutting out or paring back their holiday parties, according to the annual nationwide survey by the staffing firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Several different companies can hold their office party at the same time, and everyone gets the discounted per-person rate that goes with a larger affair, said Lori Chiazzo, account executive for Jersey Street Furniture Rental, of Clifton, which is decorating the Wilshire ballroom for these joint office parties.

NEW YORK -- Airfare wars and room-rate promotions are usually aimed at vacationers, but airlines and hotels are resorting to similar tactics to regain their traditional cash cow -- the business traveler.
Corporate travelers, who pay higher airfares when they sit in the front cabins of planes or book close to the date of travel, are flying coach more often -- or not traveling at all during the recession. And their employers are booking fewer banquet halls and blocks of rooms, leaving many hotels pining for the sizable and reliable revenue that business meetings used to generate.
