  • The president of The Bank of Romney said the institution has had a good year and remains strong. Even so, September will not go down as a great month. Two unrelated, unpleasant events occurred at the bank in September. First came the news that federal regulators had taken over mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Bank of Romney and at least nine other West Virginia banks - plus hundreds of other community banks across the country - held preferred stock in one or both of the mortgage companies. The value of that stock dropped to near zero following the takeover, although it has since bounced back a little.

  • WASHINGTON -- While polls show Mike Huckabee leading Mitt Romney in Iowa, a new survey of an oversized sample shows Huckabee slipping and no longer ahead of Romney. A private corporate interest commissioned a phone bank survey of 15,000 Iowans who say they will attend Republican presidential caucuses Jan. 3. It showed Romney with 30 percent and Huckabee at 26 percent. Sen. John McCain was third with 12 percent and Rudy Giuliani fourth at 9 percent.

  • WASHINGTON (AP) - Rudy Giuliani used up half as much money as Mitt Romney in the Republican presidential contest so far this year, a difference in spending that left both Republican candidates with nearly equal amounts of cash in the bank. Romney outraised Giuliani, collecting contributions totaling $20.7 for the primary contest to Giuliani's $13.6 million.

  • Romney Has Failed to Sever Associations with State PACs in Accordance with FEC Guidelines CONCORD, N.H., July 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the New Hampshire and Alabama Democratic Parties filed a joint amended Federal Election Commission complaint following a complaint filed in April, producing new evidence that Mitt Romney's campaign may be circumventing campaign finance laws by using its state Political Action Committees (PACs), including its Alabama State PAC, to raise unlimited funds in excess of federal limits and then using those funds to aid his presidential campaign.

  • MORGANTOWN - Four Republican Party brothers are suing the city of Morgantown, claiming harassment and intimidation by fire and building code inspectors cost them money and helped lead to the collapse of a rental-housing empire they'd been building for decades. Federal court records show Kris, Ben, Monty and Andrew "Mac" Warner were nearly $14 million in debt and had only $24,000 in the bank when they sued the city last month. The case was filed in Clarksburg bankruptcy court because the Warners have been in Chapter 11 for more than a year, trying to reorganize McCoy 6 Apartments LLC and Augusta Apartments LLC.

  • PARIS - The Republican Party in the United States - 15 months before the next presidential election - has already burdened itself with an array of front-running presidential candidates (according to the White House press, which deems itself the judge of who is and is not serious among the presidential candidates) who are evangelical or fundamentalist Protestant Christians, with the exception of a single Mormon. The leading candidates in Iowa are already known to including advocates of eliminating the income tax (80 percent of government revenue), abolishing the Federal Reserve Bank, constitutionally mandating a balanced budget, and eliminating or imposing a moratorium upon environmental regulation. Experience suggests that none of these, except for the Mormon, Mitt Romney, has much chan...
