  • One of my favorite rock groups of all-time is Electric Light Orchestra, a rock group in the early '70s to mid '80s that sang about everything - even if it didn't make any sense to anyone It bugs me that hardly anybody knows who they are or what they sing. Sometimes one of their songs will be used in a commercial or movie, but not very many people know that it is them singing the song.

  • Finding a cellist in a rock band is unusual. Sure, there is the group Apocalyptica, which is a cello quartet that plays covers of metal bands. And in the '70s a band called Electric Light Orchestra utilized cellos in its recordings and stage shows, and Loreena McKennitt has a cellist. But a cello in a rock band is still pretty rare.

  • ELO IN LB: Long Beach is famous for more reasons than we can count (or feel like counting, anyway), and the latest reason came through our e-mailbox last week. Lynn Hoskins, of Laguna Niguel, does promotional work and an internationally distributed newsletter for the rock band the Electric Light Orchestra, and its affiliated artists/outfits Jeff Lynne, the Move and Roy Wood. Hoskins writes: "Long-time fans overseas talk of coming to Southern California so they can have their photo taken in front of the Municipal Auditorium, where Electric Light Orchestra's "The Night the Lights Went On (In Long Beach)' album was recorded back in 1974.

  • ADI and partnering vendors hosted its annual ISC West bash at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, welcoming more than 2,000 customers to an evening of great food and entertainment. "Starship and Friends" once again headlined with hits from the last three decades. Joining Starship lead singer [Mickey Thomas] onstage were lead singers from other mega bands from days gone by, including Santana, Electric Light Orchestra, The Knack and [John Cafferty] and the Beaver Brown Band.

  • David Sanborn performs all weekend long at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., (8 and 10 p.m. shows each night). Jazz sax player David Sanborn, like all of the instrumental greats, has an unmistakable, signature tone that is all his own. His high soprano wail is immediately recognizable, perhaps in part due to his tenure as band guest on the "Late Night with David Letterman" show. But the career of David Sanborn goes back much further than that. He played blues with the ground shaking Paul Butterfield Blues Band during the '60s (Steve Miller also was in that band). Since then, Mr. Sanborn has played and/or recorded with everyone from Gil Evans and Jaco Pastorius to James Brown, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.

  • Heavy Rainbow, the ' latest release, opens on a bad scene: "Woke up, got kicked in the head by a word / two vowels, two syllables that smashed my face to the dirt." And the title track, it seems, tells of the murder of a "bastard praised too much" by the lover of his abused partner, with crazy dynamic shifts added for emphasis.
