A $2.3 million contract to scrap two decrepit ships could be the beginning of more contracts to dismantle the government's aging fleet, adding economic life to Southeast Baltimore County, said U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta yesterday.
Mineta spoke amid the rusting buildings and torn fields fronting the 115-year-old Sparrows Point Shipyard. Activity at the port had dwindled since the yard's previous owners, Baltimore Marine Industries Inc., filed for bankruptcy last summer.

Within the past 13 months, Baltimore Marine Industries Inc. filed for bankruptcy, shuttered its doors and sold off its property.
Normally, such a case would merely be grist for the industry rumor mill. But the Baltimore shipyard's bankruptcy is having a ripple effect among ship repairers in Hampton Roads. More than 100 local companies are left with unpaid bills that range from a few thousand dollars each to more than $1 million. And four of the top 20 unsecured creditors listed in Baltimore Marine's bankruptcy filing are from Hampton Roads.
