Conversely, the applicability of these processes to sex selection may help validate the emerging concept of biomedicalization itself. Since the late 1990s several factors have led to an increased acceptance of sex selection in the United States, including the development of new marketable forms of prepregnancy technologies that do not require an abortion.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) deems prisoners to be a vulnerable population because prisoners "may be under constraints because of their incarceration which could affect their ability to make a truly voluntary and uncoerced decision whether or not to participate as subjects in research." (NIH, 1978, §46.302). Stringent federal regulations have been instituted to protect prisoners from coercion or abuse. This article was borne from my experiences in implementing a mental health research project in a state prison system. The extent of the regulations at the project outset was underestimated, thus causing logistical challenges and delays. Familiarity with these regulations will facilitate the completion of prison-based research projects for other nurse researchers.

For the third time in a half-century, a Democratic presidential nominee from Massachusetts has picked a senator from the South as a running mate. In 1960 and 1988, Texans Lyndon Baines Johnson and Lloyd Bentsen were chosen. Now, in 2004, it is John Edwards from North Carolina.
John Kerry's selection of Edwards follows a pattern of geographic balancing that started when Thomas Jefferson picked New York politician Aaron Burr as his running mate. Back then, Southerners often headed a successful ticket and Northerners occupied the second spot. Andrew Jackson continued this geographic tag team when he selected New York Sen. Martin Van Buren in 1832.
