The good news is that lobsters are not exactly picky eaters. They'll crawl into a trap for just about any kind of seafood, or non- seafood.
The bad news is that it takes an awful lot of bait to lure the crustaceans into the millions of lobster traps set along the Maine coast each year. And the most abundant and reliable bait source - herring - may soon be in short supply.
...Even if lobstermen can switch to other baits, however, the herring shortage is e...

An old saw holds: 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved. Usually, the same is true of political campaigns - the quest is worthwhile even if victory proves elusive. Not so for Wall, a Madison developer who got it into his head - and essentially nobody else's - that he would make a fine U.S. senator. When he got elbowed aside in the Republican primary by [Ron Johnson], he opened fire with a blast of accusations, including that he lost because of "coercion," "corruption," "dirty tricks," "lies," "deceit" and "buy-offs." Yeah, that and his not being a good candidate.
This year, Madison's mayor proved he wasn't afraid to take on his city's critics. He disparaged Sen. [Glenn Grothman] as a legislative failure, aside from "authoring an amendment that sullied our state con...

I was thinking:
It was almost two months ago that a red flag was raised in this space when new UConn president Susan Herbst hired a senior director of development for athletics who did not answer to athletic director Jeff Hathaway. Herbst was said to be less than charmed by Hathaway's casual attention to fundraising and let it be known in her inner circle.

Although some viewers may balk at the film's gauzy view of the relationship between a cheetah and a child, [Carroll Ballard] and his writers have toughened up the material considerably from their children's book source in which the cat was a lifelong house pet. Although Ballard's film paints an optimistic portrait of a human-habituated cheetah's adaptability to the wild, the filmmaker does take some pains to stress the rigors of the wilderness, while avoiding the goriest details of the hunt. At 100 minutes, the film is a little bit long and contemplative for the youngest children. Slightly older kids, however, should be perfectly charmed by this story of a boy and his cheetah.

For [Barbara Ehrenreich] the increase in white-collar unemployment, the downsizing, the off-shoring of previously "safe" jobs all add up to a shattering of a social contract understood by generations of Americans. That is, work hard, stay loyal to the company and be rewarded with security. A generation ago, such employer monogamy was the norm. Today, with the exception of a few niches in the public sector, folks are impressed if you've stuck with the same job for five years. The irony here is palpable, or at least it should be. Where dissident intellectuals once lamented the conformist oppression meted out and endured by incarnations of "the man in the gray flannel suit," now, it seems they'd welcome his return home with a path of lotuses.
In her conclusion, Ehrenreich makes a rathe...

Jennifer Findley, 41, of Sewickley, is working on it. A housewife with two teen-age daughters, she's the household's fishing enthusiast; her husband, she says, doesn't "get" fishing. Findley signed up for Gainey's beginner's class this spring. "I'd fly-fished before, but I'd never used different rods, or lures," she explains. "I felt like I walked into the class knowing absolutely nothing. I didn't even know what we fished for in Pennsylvania." The amount of material covered in the two-hour-plus classes impressed Findley. "[KAREN GAINEY] just loaded me up with information." She laughs, "I'm still trying to process it all. So many lures and jigs, and rigs and rods and reels; when do I use it, and where do I use it?
Taking a cue from professional TV producers, Gainey films in an a...
