  • Her parents hadn't talked to each other for 30 years until her mother showed up to see Taketha Wilkins' experience as part of a play. It was in prison, where Wilkins said she is serving an eight- year sentence for robbery. The play, "Prison Stories III," was performed a month ago inside the Shelby County Correction Center in preparation for a public debut Thursday at TheatreWorks . Stories bottled up for years pour out in the play. They are stories of pent-up anger, death, meth labs, beatings, babies, prison food and, oddly, a joy in sharing the saddest stories.

  • A California murder convict working as a car salesman at a Salt Lake dealership had his parole revoked for a local arrest, but it was months before Utah officials knew. Cleon Jones was arrested Feb. 15 on multiple first-degree felonies after an 18-year-old woman said she was raped at gunpoint in her West Valley apartment. Originally police believed the former car salesman learned the woman's address from her credit application she filled out while purchasing a car.

  • Employee fraud has increased in frequency and intensity during the past few years, leading employers to step up their use of background checks. These investigations provide opportunities for CPAs and forensic accountants, but they also present legal pitfalls if accountants are not familiar with (FCRA). Fraud does not discriminate and is found in all types of organizations. The FCRA, which took effect in 1971, was enacted to protect consumers from inaccurate or misleading credit reports and from unauthorized disclosure of information in the reports. • By William J. Dobson Last summer I described the unlikely battle between Yevgenia Chirikova and the Kremlin. Yevgenia is a young mother of two with no background in political activism, but over the past four years she has become one of Russia's most outspoken -- and effective -- environmental activists. Last week, her fight for Khimki Forest took a nasty turn.

  • Background A flame licking around a brushed steel Savoy logo was a common sight this past spring and summer, heralding the arrival of the new Strip District restaurant and lounge. It could be seen on white vans zipping across the city and in various ads. It flickered on the establishment's website and is the first thing you notice as you step into the main dining room -- in the form of a fireplace glinting behind the logo at the bar. It is simple, yet hypnotizing, and helped create a lot of buzz around the May 5 opening.
