  • LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent filmmakers Jonathan Ehlers, Patrick Ward-Perkins and Jenine Mayring will donate a portion of the proceeds from their upcoming feature film DRY, a post-apocalyptic western about water scarcity, to charity: water, a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Award-winning producer Jenine Mayring (Telly Awards, Davey Awards) commented, "As philanthropic filmmakers, we passionately believe that we can produce profitable films that simultaneously give back to our communities. So we came up with a revolutionary new idea: for each film we produce, we will align ourselves with a charity specific to that particular film.

  • With assumptions that California is headed toward a fourth year of drought, the state Department of Water Resources announced Tuesday that it will supply local communities with only 5 percent of the water they requested for next year. The DWR's State Water Project is one of several major suppliers of Los Angeles water. Because they have other sources of water, local officials said they aren't yet ready to announce stricter conservation measures beyond those announced in the past year, but are monitoring the situation carefully.

  • Sierra Madre officials will work with consultants to bring back three water rate hike scenarios to the council at a future meeting following direction council members gave staff on Tuesday night. The proposals will aim to more evenly distribute water rate increases over a five-year period rather than have a larger increase upfront as originally proposed, City Manager Elaine Aguilar said.

  • Buffalo's water system came under attack Tuesday when business leader Carl P. Paladino told Common Council members the system is plagued with "unfair" and "disgusting" policies. Paladino said the city should stop paying a private operator to run the water system and return the system to the Public Works Department. In the long term, he said, the city should work to merge its water network with Erie County's system.

  • The owner of a huge apartment building in Passaic that operated without a water meter for 20 years has agreed to pay the Passaic Valley Water Commission $150,000 to settle a claim for back water and sewer charges. The PVWC had originally sought $1.6 million -- including $1 million in interest -- from Gregory Realty LLC, the owner of a 96- unit apartment building located at 260 Gregory Ave. But the water utility has agreed to settle for less than 10 percent of that after its attempt to collect interest fell apart during negotiations.
