  • In this article, the financial prospects of baby boomers in their elderly years are examined. The article primarily attempts to draw together and summarize results found by other researchers, but a few new estimates are presented. The consensus of the research appears to be the following. Up to this pint, the baby boom generation as a whole has a higher economic status that did their parents' generation at the same ages, but this does not hold for some subgroups. When it becomes elderly, the baby boom generation as a whole probably will have a higher economic status that their parents' generation has and will have at those ages, but, again, this may not hold for some subgroups. It is uncertain whether the baby boom generation as a whole will have enough resources in retirement to mainta...

  • Imagine having to deal with this nightmare scenario: One-fifth of the executives, managers and workers with critical skills that the company needs to survive have walked out the door. Unfortunately, that's the real-life predicament that companies could face as soon as 2008 because of the aging of the baby boom generation, according to Mary Sue Rogers, global leader of IBM Business Consulting Services' Human Capital Management group. Rogers says that over the next decade, mature companies in the U.S., Europe and Japan will be hit by a double whammy-difficulty in retaining aging workers, and possible shortages of workers in certain key job categories and skill sets. That's why IBM is unveiling a package of consulting services that will help companies figure out how to cope with the coming...

  • While many studies explore the fairness of taxes and government spending across income groups, few studies explore the distribution of tax burdens and government spending across age groups in the United States. Official projections from the Congressional Budget Office and others warn that federal spending for old-age entitlement programs is on an unsustainable long-term path due to the growing number of elderly Americans collecting federal transfer payments and the shrinking pool of American workers available to pay payroll taxes that finance those programs. As a result, Americans face hard choices in coming decades between sharply higher payroll taxes on young workers, steep cuts in Social Security and Medicare to the elderly, or some combination of the two. In total, the nation's tax ...

  • Organizations entering into the new global economy of the 21st century face challenges and threats never before experienced. Researchers have predicted that the key to success in this new era of globalization lies in the organizational leaders' ability to provide strategic leadership. The upper echelon theory suggests that leaders of organizations are subconsciously bounded by psychological factors within the leaders' personal criteria which they have been socialized to in their lifetimes. This paper will use an upper echelon theory approach to explain how the ethical and entrepreneur perspective differences of the newer generation of leaders will affect the strategic leadership of the 21st century.

  • Social Security retirement-age benefits in the United States reflect marital histories and lifetime earnings of current and former married couples. We examine women's marital history patterns and spouse and widow benefit eligibility over the past two decades, 1990 and 2009. Our analysis reveals substantial changes in women's marital patterns among the baby boom and generation X cohorts. We find a substantial decline in qualifying marital histories for Social Security spouse and widow benefits. The results reveal considerable variation by race and Hispanic origin.

  • Trend growth in the labor force is a key determinant of trends in employment and gross domestic product (GDP). Forecasts by Macroeconomic Advisers (MA) have long anticipated a marked slowing in trend growth of the labor force that would contribute to a slowing in potential GDP growth. This is reflected in MA's forecast that the aggregate rate of labor force participation will trend down, especially after 2010, largely in response to the aging of the baby boom generation, whose members are beginning to approach typical retirement ages. Expectations for a downward trajectory for the participation rate and a slowing in trend labor force growth are not unique. However, this article reports on MA research suggesting that the opposite is possible: that the slowdown in trend labor force growth...
