  • TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's supreme leader bestowed his formal endorsement on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's second term as president on Monday but withheld a powerful symbolic gesture - the kisses and close embrace that portrayed their bond four years ago. The awkward and halting moment came when Ahmadinejad leaned forward, apparently to kiss the hand of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But the supreme leader raised his left hand and gently diverted Ahmadinejad to kiss his robe. The uneasy body language reflected much of the political tension and collateral damage since the disputed June 12 election sent Iran into its worst internal unrest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

  • Prior to this month's disputed presidential election in Iran, the Obama administration sent a letter to the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for an improvement in relations, according to interviews and the leader himself. Ayatollah Khamenei confirmed the letter toward the end of a lengthy sermon last week, in which he accused the United States of fomenting protests in his country in the aftermath of the disputed June 12 presidential election.

  • Iran's tyrannical leaders, determined to make the Islamic regime a nuclear-armed state, are preparing for war. That's exactly what the United States and Israel might have to deliver, and soon. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered the Revolutionary Guards in May to speed up the regime's nuclear-bomb program and arm its missiles with nuclear warheads. Now, sources reveal, Ayatollah Khamenei has ordered the guards to prepare for war. In a recent meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, it was decided that the possibility of an attack by Israel or America in 2012 is real and that the country's forces need to prepare several contingencies for war. It also was concluded that in case of war, the regime could be victorious, though the cost would be high, but it would...

  • [...] Ayatollah Khamenei, who succeeded Khomeini as Iran's supreme leader, came to use his position as commander-in-chief of the armed forces to expand his power. Israel's military is sui generis: a doctrinal admixture derivedfrom its defense against constant terrorism and conventional threats from neighboring Arab nations, equipped with nearly top-line American and European weapon systems. Among them are those most needed for a preemptive strike on Iran, such as GBU-28 bunker buster bombs, Apache attack helicopters, and design data on a stealthy version of the F-15 Eagle fighter-bomber.

  • On Nov. 12, two massive blasts at a nearby town rocked Tehran, the Iranian capital, and may have been an attempt to assassinate the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had been scheduled to be there at the time of the explosions. Now Israel and the West must be prepared for possible Iranian retaliation. After the explosions, Iranians found themselves wondering whether Israel had attacked. The recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Iran's nuclear weapons program and the warnings of military action by Israeli officials have alarmed Iranians about the threat of war.

  • [...] Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in the most important issues facing the nation, rejected the proposal. [...] according to the IAEA's own reports, of the 61 states that have signed both the NPT safeguards and the Additional Protocol, the IAEA can certify the absence of undeclared nuclear facilities in only 21 nations.

  • Four days before WikiLeaks revealed 400,000 documents of war crimes and egregious human rights abuses in Iraq, the country's power-hungry Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki made a one-day trip to Tehran to meet with another power-hungry leader, Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - fitting bedfellows. Both are deeply loathed at home, with little or no support; both are leaders of regimes that preside over killing, torture and rape of their fellow citizens. One day, those responsible for these crimes deserve to be arraigned before the International Criminal Court. This sinister meeting of minds had one objective: bolstering the ebbing status of Mr. al-Maliki in Iraq and his unlawful power grab of the premiership. Such an outcome would, of course, benefit Ayatollah Khamenei and his ruling clique be...

  • TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's supreme leader opposed postponing Feb. 20 elections, effectively siding with hard-liners in a crisis that has paralyzed the nation's political system, a prominent lawmaker told The Associated Press Tuesday. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told the country's reformist president, Mohammad Khatami, during crisis talks Tuesday that parliamentary elections must be held as scheduled, lawmaker Rajabali Mazrouei said.

  • IT was a blunt exchange with the bitter bite of the ideological battles between talk-show hosts Keith Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly - except the sparring partners were Hillary Rodham Clinton and Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. We see that the government of Iran, the supreme leader, the president, the Parliament, are being supplanted, and that Iran is moving toward a military dictatorship," snapped the U.S. secretary of state while visiting Qatar on Monday. In Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei snarled back: "Now the Americans, once again, have dispatched their agent as a saleswoman to the Persian Gulf to spread lies.

  • LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Boxing champ Muhammad Ali is seeking the release of two American hikers from Iran by lobbying the country's supreme leader in a way that few American dignitaries can: as a brother in Islam. Arguably the most prominent U.S. Muslim, Ali made his simple, behind-the scenes appeal to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in February and released his letter to The Associated Press on Wednesday. Ali's wife, Lonnie, said he would be willing to return to the country, which he has visited twice, to work on the release if his health allows.
