For example, the 2007 Ford CVPI (base model without fire suppression system) has a door placard that lists the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 5,650 pounds. That is the maximum. No combination of passengers, cargo fuel load or upfit gear can be allowed to exceed that limit. This 2007 CVPI also lists two gross axle weight ratings (GAWR). The GAWR for the front is 2,750 pounds, while the GAWR for the rear is 2,900 pounds. Again, under no circumstances must either axle see more weight than the GAWR.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coalition for Transportation Productivity (CTP), a group of more than 180 shippers and associations dedicated to responsibly increasing federal weight limits on interstate highways, today announced that federal truck weight reform known as the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act (SETA) has been reintroduced in the House of Representatives by Reps. Mike Michaud (D-Maine) and Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) as H.R. 763. The bill's reintroduction comes as Congress considers the first Highway Reauthorization package in more than six years. SETA provides a critical opportunity for Congress to enact a Highway Reauthorization proposal that modernizes American truck shipping standards in order to protect motorists and the environment, and give U.S. manufac...

Dear Tom and Ray: I found an error in your otherwise good column. The subject was placement of weight in the trunk to make more- effective traction for a rear-wheel-drive car. You stated that the best place to put the weight is directly on top of the drive axle. Sorry, but that is wrong. The most effective place is as far aft as you can put the weight. Let's say you put a 100-pound weight directly over the axle of a a car with a 110-inch wheelbase, the rear wheel load goes up 100 pounds. But if you put the weight 40 inches aft of the axle, the rear wheel load goes up 100 x (110+40)/110 = 136 pounds. Of course, the front axle load goes down by 36 pounds, but that is less than 2 percent of its load - which is negligible.

All forms of Nissan's 350Z provide performance aficionados with a dramatic driving experience ranging from the Base through the Enthusiast, Touring and Grand Touring, getting progressively better, up to the ultimate NISMO model. When the 350Z first appeared on the scene, I pointed out that it happened to be a $50,000 sports car that was available for well under $40,000. That holds true today - especially in the case of the NISMO tuned version, which was added to the Z-car lineup for the 2007 model year. It may now even be likened to a $60,000-plus sports car for still less than $40,000. Base prices run from $28,210 to $38,350 for the NISMO Coupe. Yes, you can spend more than $40,000 if you add on everything that's absolutely possible. Except for the NISMO, which comes only in the guise ...
