A plan to open a steel processing business in a portion of the abandoned American Axle & Manufacturing plant on the East Side won more than $280,000 in tax breaks Monday from the Erie County Industrial Development Agency. Galvstar LLC plans to acquire 120,000 square feet of space in the East Delavan Avenue factory for a $23.8 million start-up venture that company officials hope will produce 180,000 tons of galvanized steel per year and employ 50 people.

American Axle & Manufacturing's fourth-quarter profits declined 28 percent from a year ago, but its sales were up 26 percent, and executives expect continued improvement this year. The Detroit-based automotive parts supplier reported net income of $34.9 million, or 47 cents per share, compared with $48.5 million, or 80 cents per share. A year ago, American Axle recorded a tax gain of $48.8 million, to recognize the benefit of a special U.S. tax claim.
