This rule amends the FAA's existing flight, duty and rest regulations applicable to certificate holders and their flightcrew members operating under the domestic, flag, and supplemental operations rules. The rule recognizes the universality of factors that lead to fatigue in most individuals and regulates these factors to ensure that flightcrew members in passenger operations do not accumulate dangerous amounts of fatigue. Fatigue threatens aviation safety because it increases the risk of pilot error that could lead to an accident. This risk is heightened in passenger operations because of the additional number of potentially impacted individuals. The new requirements eliminate the current distinctions between domestic, flag and supplemental passenger operations. The rule provides diffe...
NEW DELHI - Searchers combed a steep, wooded hillside in southern India on Saturday for the remains of 158 passengers and crew of an Air India Express flight and clues to the cause of the country's worst aviation accident in a decade. With the black box voice recorder not yet recovered, it was unclear why Flight IX-812, carrying mostly migrant workers returning from the Persian Gulf, overshot the runway in Mangalore and plunged down the hillside early Saturday.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Aviation Administration unveiled a plan yesterday for reducing the accident rate for private and corporate aircraft by 10 percent by the year 2018. Federal Aviation Administrator Randy Babbitt told reporters he is concerned that the accident rate for general aviation -- which ranges from weekend flyers in single-engine propeller planes to sleek corporate jets, but excludes the airlines -- has improved only slightly in recent years.
The mother of a teenager killed in a helicopter accident has filed suit against the Federal Aviation Administration alleging air traffic control negligence. Stephanie Younger sued the FAA after her daughter, Ashley Younger, 17, was killed when the Trooper 2 medevac helicopter crashed in District Heights, Md., in September 2008. The pilot, a paramedic and a field provider also died in the crash. One passenger survived the accident.
TUNOSHNA, Russia - A private jet carrying a Russian professional hockey team to its first game of the season crashed shortly after takeoff Wednesday, killing 43 people - including European and former NHL players - in one of the worst aviation disasters in sports history. Two people survived the accident. The crash also was the latest tragedy to befall the sport of hockey - following the sudden, offseason deaths of three of the NHL's tough-guy enforcers that has shocked fans.
JUNEAU, Alaska - The crash that killed former Sen. Ted Stevens served as another tragic reminder about the dangers of flying in Alaska, where general aviation accident rates are more than twice the national average. For many Alaskans, flying hundreds of miles to larger cities for shopping and errands is as common as taxis and buses might be to urban dwellers, exposing residents to a litany of hazards including treacherous mountain passes and volatile weather.
