  • * What have been the main rewards? Since implementing Informatica, the Humberside Police department has seen the accuracy of its vehicleregistration numbers climb from 83 percent to 98 percent, and that's just one form of data that's seen a big improvement in accuracy. Our intelligence unit has been able to analyze data like never before, and it's given us the ability to verify case leads with law-enforcement agencies throughout the country. In an interview, Humberside Police Authority head of information services Graham Dawson talked about his company. Dawson said Humberside Police is one of 43 police departments in England and Wales, and is responsible for policing a sizable county in northeast England. They had a number of challenges, many of which a typical organization or business ...

  • This mathematical approach overcomes the limitations of other approaches to Internet search. Metadata is good when you can get it, according to Autonomy CEO Michael Lynch, but has some drawbacks. "You can't always persuade people to agree on tags," he points out, "and they need to be revised as situations change. One person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter. Enterprise search solutions have traditionally been ahead of Internet search in terms of sophistication and effectiveness. Now some of those technologies are being directed toward the Web, with much success. Researchers, including librarians and journalists, were also turning to the Internet to augment the information they were able to glean from the subscription services. To simplify the search process for subscripti...

  • Digital books were the hands-down winner in the news this month. Almost every day there was a press release from the main players: Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Yahoo!. At Internet Librarian Oct 24-26 in Monterey, CA, several panels and presenters debated what Google was up to, especially with its Google Print program and what it means for libraries. In the meantime, a rival group called the Open Content Alliance was hosting its inaugural event in San Francisco, during which Microsoft announced that it was joining OCA. At press time, Microsoft announced that it was partnering with The British Library (BL) to scan 100,000 of the library's out-of-copyright books. The same day the Microsoft/BL news broke, Amazon announced it is developing two new programs. Meanwhile, Google resumed digiti...

  • OmniFind Yahoo Edition is positioned squarely against Google's search appliance (GSA). But we expect that it may rock the lower end of the search software market as well. Vendors like ZyLAB, Coveo, Ultra-seek (from Autonomy), dtSearch, ISYS or X1 have been moving upmarket slowly as they add more features and scale to greater numbers of documents. This is classic disruption: high-end platforms from FAST and Autonomy, IBM, Endeca and Google, with vendors like Vivisimo and ZyLAB joining their ranks. In December, IBM and Yahoo released their joint search engine, OmniFind Yahoo Edition. This search engine is a free download from http://omnifind.ibm.yahoo.com. Although the software has a small footprint and can run on a laptop, IBM has added incremental indexing, support for 200+ document typ...
