AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- TI Automotive to provide fuel tank systems to five different Volkswagen Group vehicles.
EPA and NHTSA, on behalf of the Department of Transportation, are issuing this joint proposal to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy for light-duty vehicles for model years 2017-2025. This proposal extends the National Program beyond the greenhouse gas and corporate average fuel economy standards set for model years 2012-2016. On May 21, 2010, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum requesting that NHTSA and EPA develop through notice and comment rulemaking a coordinated National Program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of light-duty vehicles for model years 2017- 2025. This proposal, consistent with the President's request, responds to the country's critical need to address global climate change and to reduce oil consumption. NHTSA is proposing C...

Earlier this year, the first-ever manned flight of a fuel cell-powered light aircraft completed testing in Spain. It was modified by Boeing Research & Technology Europe to incorporate a hybrid low-emission engine, containing a proton exchange membrane fuel cell power system and lithium-ion batteries to power an electric motor coupled to a conventional propeller. Another recent fuel cell first was the Suzuki Crosscage, a hydrogen-fueled concept motorcycle unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. What is common to both is Intelligent Energy, a specialist company that provided the fuel cell power systems and which has just unveiled its latest project in the automotive sector. Intelligent Energy claims that its fuel cell stacks and systems are set apart from conventional systems by the fa...
A federal jury in Illinois has ruled that Woodland Park-based Sturman Industries broke an agreement with Caterpillar Inc. to develop technology used in automotive fuel systems. Caterpillar won't receive any damages, however, because the company waited to file its lawsuit until after the deadline for such claims. The jury, which reached the verdict Dec. 1 after a monthlong trial, is the second to side with Caterpillar.
The next time you glance into your car's rear-view mirror, remember it's a chapter from racing history. The ordinary rear-view mirror is one of a plethora of automotive technologies that evolved from the race track. Radial tires, disc brakes, fuel injection systems and safer car interiors also have strong ties to auto racing.
Subsequent advancements in emissions after-treatment systems and advanced fuel injection technologies have allowed the diesel engine to persevere. Automakers are busy developing next-generation diesel engines that will use fewer cylinders to produce the same power output of bigger engines. One solution is the adoption of high and low pressure EGR systems while improving the operating efficiency of the diesel engine. When it comes to efficiency and performance, one component in a diesel engine that can mean the difference between make or break: The fuel injector. In the early stages of diesel development, engineers deployed solenoid-based injectors to introduce the fuel into the combustion chamber. When it comes to future technologies, there's general consensus among OEMs and suppliers t...
VW ROAD TRIP FINDS DIESEL POWER AT A CROSSROADS The future of automotive propulsion is anyone's guess. More and different vehicles are gaining hybrid systems to increase fuel economy and power; hydrogen can burn in modified internal- combustion engines; and fuel cells are thought to be the Holy Grail, though far off.
