From the days when vending machines first appeared in cafeterias, the route driver has played a key role in the success of the vending company The driver established the relationship with the customer and represented the service provider to the account. The Department of Energy (DOE) classifies beverage vending machines into two distinct classifications: class A machine (fully-cooled machine) and class B machine (any beverage vending machine not considered class A). The DOE recognizes that fully-cooled beverage vending machines generally have glass fronts, therefore designates these machines "Class A." By doing so, "Class B" machines, by default, are any beverage vending machine not considered class A.
* Automated Vending Technologies is a company that manufactures vending machines as well as a host of vending technologies, including digital touchscreens and cashless payment. The payment solution includes credit cards, bar code cards, and debit cards. The cashless component can be retrofitted to existing machines.
A handful of technology companies have developed liquid crystal display (LCD) screens for vending machines and have been testing them in cooperation with video and touchscreen providers, vending product manufacturers and vending operators. The most extensive testing has been done by AVT (formerly known as Automated Vending Technologies). AVT is both a vending machine operator and manufacturer and has developed its own vending management software and hardware.
Another vending operator, Automatic Vending Service Inc., based in Scottsdale, Ariz., agreed to retrofit 30 machines with Levine's screens. "I thought it had some potential," said Jim Leonard, company owner. "It's a little value added to the snack machine.
[Mack Wilbourn] has been studying video screens on vending machines for the last few years. "It can tell the story of whatever product you're trying to promote," he said. "If you're flashing that (image), you can get somebody's attention.
