The letter writer notes similar consequences for the female offender, stating that "it is enough for the world to know that she has done wrong, and at once the door of mercy and kindness is closed against her, and she is shut out, to associate only with those who would plunge her soul deeper in the pit of error (Anonymous, 1858:5)." The author of the letter backs up his account through the inclusion of a chart, taken from court records between the years of 1842 and 1858, that showed the number bailed and the amount of bail posted by Augustus during this period.

When the Reitz family moved to Evansville, they were among a flood of German-speaking immigrants to the area. But within a few years, John Augustus Reitz was among the area's leading citizens.
John died in 1891, leaving his son, Francis Joseph Reitz, in charge of the family business - a lumber company - and the family name.

The bugles and guns are museum pieces now, and the players of the Civil War era, both great and ordinary, have long ago turned to dust. But experience Stephen Vincent Benet's "John Brown's Body, " and you might almost hear the explosion of 1,000 massed rifles firing and the gallop of lathered mounts through the haze. You can close your eyes and imagine you are listening to the timbre and solemnity of Abraham Lincoln's voice or feel the sticky heat of a certain July day when proudly held flags fell blood-stained in a Pennsylvania wheat field.
John Brown is captured in a daguerreotype, taken circa 1846 to 1847, by Augustus Washington. The daguerreotype was a gift by the Hall Family Foundation in honor of the 75th anniversary of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Sixteen challenges were filed in Maricopa County Superior Court against candidates' nominating petitions, including allegations that Sen. John Huppenthal collected thousands of invalid signatures and that House candidate Augustus Shaw lives in wrong legislative district.
The Arizona Democratic Party is challenging Huppenthal's petition in his run for superintendent of public instruction, alleging that all 11,053 of the signatures he filed are invalid because they were collected before he filed his official candidate committee. The challenge alleges that the signatures were all collected by Huppenthal's exploratory committee.

Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid's characterization of then-candidate Barack Obama's chances to win the presidency because he is a "light-skinned" African-American "with no Negro dialect"-well, was right. All Reid left out waste fact that Obama was "male," because let's face it, that helped too-that and the fact that he spoke English better than any other Black man who has ever run for President and didn't sport a perm or an Afro. What was wong was that that Reid shouldn't have ever said what he said publicly considering he is white and these types of statements can't help but come off a bit racist But I guess that's what's to be expected when Tyler Perry films get national distribution. AD of Black's most inner thoughts and kitchen table conversations are now out in the ope...
