NEW YORK - Walter Energy, a major U.S. coal producer and exporter, said Thursday it is seeking to acquire Western Coal Corp. in a deal valued at $3.2 billion in cash. Walter, based in Tampa, Fla., is proposing to acquire outstanding shares of the Canadian coal company for 11.50 Canadian dollars each. The plan includes a separate agreement to purchase shares from affiliates of investment firm Audley Capital, which owns 19.8 percent of Western Coal's common shares.
LONDON (Reuters) - U.S.-based mining group Walter Energy Inc. is to buy Canada's Western Coal for C$3.3 billion ($3.3 billion) to create one of the largest producers of steel-making metallurgical coal. The deal shows how surging global steel production, driven mainly by China, is stimulating M&A activity in the mining sector, with coal producers scrambling to take advantage of booming Asian demand.
