  • This article considers resource discovery from the viewpoint of visually impaired people. Starting with the tasks of find, identify, select, and obtain, it examines how catalogs can be enhanced to assist visually impaired users. It then looks at the inclusion of specific data within catalog records and how they help the user. This is followed by some reflections on display issues and a reference to the need for accessibility in catalog systems. It concludes that improvements for visually impaired people provide features that sighted people will appreciate as well.

  • If it does transpire that the CD goes the way of the cassette tape, what price will be paid in terms of sound quality? How will that affect the future creation of "music as art?" If everything sounds thin, overcompressed and lacking in depth, will this encourage the further creation of thin and crappy-sounding music, since that will then become the sound people are accustomed to? We saw a similar development with the Auto-Tune debacle of the past decade -- originally employed as an in-studio effect to push strong relative pitch toward the perfect pitch ideal, the sound was abused by pop stars with dubious senses of pitch, and thereby became the status quo, even for singers who didn't need the help. Could poor quality modes of digital dissemination, listened to largely on midline compute...

  • DAYTON -- The growing popularity of digital music downloads could send compact discs the way of cassette tapes. Music retail stores might soon follow. Overall music sales were up 14 percent from 2006, according to Nielsen SoundScan's 2007 music sale figures for the U.S. Downloaded song and album sales hit record levels in 2007, rising 45 percent and 53 percent, respectively. But explosive digital growth wasn't enough to make up for the loss in physical CD sales, which fell nearly 19 percent. The steady decline of CD sales in recent years has led to the demise of such retail chains as Tower Records and the Musicland Group, which operated Sam Goody, Media Play and Suncoast Motion Picture Company stores. Locally, independent retailers such as Renaissance Music Media and the original Dingle...

  • On Can You Jack?, Larry Heard (a.k.a. Mr. Fingers) plays with the same atmospheric washes and dubbed-out drum sounds that have become government-issue in big-room club music, 20 years on. Phuture's genrenaming "Acid Tracks" and "Phuture Jacks" are warped enough to warrant spiked punch even in 2005. But it's Marshall Jefferson's "I've Lost Control" - which [Ron Hardy] would play on cassette at the Music Box before Jefferson even considered making an actual record - that defines the DIY-punk glory of house. Thrown together in a matter of hours by aft amateur who'd done no more than gone into debt purchasing a drum machine and synth, "I've Lost Control" is still biting, dark, and fresh today, two decades on. Leaving behind the million-dollar studio sound that house has become, this documen...
