THE recent massive response to the now endlessly explored student loan scandal, marked by the firing of key responsible personnel and several colleges admitting to mea culpa, is not enough. Despite supposed reforms within the state police, troopers who report misconduct within their ranks are still putting their careers at risk.
All this was supposed to change after the release in 2006 of a joint investigation of the state police by the New York State Police and the Connecticut attorney general. That investigation, which was greatly aided by whistleblower complaints, detailed botched investigations, systematic misconduct and the cover-up of abuses by troopers such as domestic violence and drunken driving.

A panel discussion on issues and development in corporate sentencing is presented. The series of corporate scandals revealed over the past few years, coupled with a host of new regulations aimed at identifying, redressing, and preventing corporate misconduct, have dramatically increased the level of enforcement attention directed to US companies. Today's corporations face substantial pressure to report potential problems to regulators at an early stage. Regulators are facing public demands that individual wrongdoers be held personally accountable. Timothy Coleman, Senior Counsel to Deputy Attorney General James Comey, said prosecuting the corporation criminally gives an opportunity to send a very powerful message of deterrence that can be much stronger than the deterrent message that yo...
