AIKEN - Anyone busted in South Carolina for driving under the influence might as well write the state a blank check, court officials say.
Just one arrest for DUI can cost a driver thousands of dollars in fines, court costs, attorney's fees and high-risk insurance. It only gets more expensive if someone is caught more than once, said Aiken County Magistrate Court Judge Tracey Carroll.

Driving home drunk from that New Year's Eve party could cost you big-time. Says Highway Patrol Commissioner Mike Brown, "There will be no warnings and there will be no second chances. We're going to be looking for impaired drivers and if we catch you and you're convicted you will go to jail. Our holiday greeting is simple. 'Here's one for the road - use a designated non-drinking driver.' "Likely consequences involve; having your car towed and impounded, an increase in insurance rates, a stint in DUI treatment programs, community service and suspension of your driver's license. Expect to pay about $5,200 for your decision to drive drunk. Here's how the fees break down: Car insurance increase $2700, DUI fine $480, assessment for courts $818, DUI classes $550, vehicle towing and stor...

It helps to be a drug addict. When the 24-year-old son of President Gore got pulled over doing over 100 mph south of Los Angeles on July 4, cops found pot and controlled pharmaceuticals-Vicodin, Xanax, Valium, Adderall and Soma-aboard his Prius. "He didn't have a prescription for any of those drugs," said Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. Sentence: 90 days at a Malibu rehab clinic. If Al Gore III finishes the program, his arrest record will vanish-even though he has previous arrests for drugs and a DUI. "He had recently smoked marijuana, but it did not impair him enough that he was driving under the influence," said Amormino. Gore's fine: zero.

Most of the state's 3,200 roadblocks over the past two years occurred in or near Hispanic neighborhoods, the Investigative Reporting Program's analysis shows. Sixty-one percent of the checkpoints occurred in locations with at least 31 percent Hispanic population. About 17 percent of the state's checkpoints occurred in areas with the lowest Hispanic population -under 18 percent.
