Pam Walker and I were drawn together by our mutual losses: My first husband, Da-vid Phillips, died when I was 27, and Pam's first husband, Don Berg, died when Pam was 30. When Pam called me in June 1990 and proposed starting a support group for young widows, we never dreamed that our humble beginnings would result in a support group that would be thriving 22 years later. We have ministered to over 400 young widows.

[Caree Annette Harper] Annette Harper currently practices criminal defense and select excessive force cases in the Los Angeles area. Ms. Harper was raised in Inglewood and Westwood, but left the Los Angeles area for a number of years. Upon her return, she has made quite an impression on the legal community. We featured one of Ms. Harper's cases in the February 2004 edition of the Los Angeles Sentinel (Franklin v. City of Inglewood). The Franklin case was somewhat overshadowed at the time by the videotaped beating of Donovan Jackson. Nonetheless, she successfully negotiated a six-figure settlement against the police department on the day of trial.
