The disorder has several components. They run the gamut from acting without thinking to inattention, hyperactivity and an overpowering desire to receive gratification instantly. Like many disorders that are still being studied, ADHD is shrouded in a certain amount of myth. Many people believe, for example, that ADHD is an outgrowth of a poor diet. Just cut down on the highly caffeinated soft drinks, the sugar, the high sodium meals and the other kinds of junk food and the child should be fine, they say. So what causes ADHD? The truth is, no one knows. There are, however, some theories. These theories include exposure to lead or improper pre-natal care. But they are just that-- theories. MOUNT LAUREL, Pa., Sept. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Politicians are often accused of "not paying attention" and, apparently, their critics may be right. Elected officials and entertainers are surpassed only by tradespeople, according to a new survey, as the most likely among people in 14 various professions to exhibit signs of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). The national survey was conducted for the Attention Deficit Disorder Association ( ADDA, http://www.add.org ) and released today on "National AD/HD Awareness Day.
