More than 16 million attempted cyber attacks are aimed at Louisiana's government databases each year and one got through in September, compromising personal information and Social Security numbers of more than 56,000 emergency medical technicians and EMT certification students. While there is no evidence that hackers used the information, those affected were notified and new security systems are now in place, said Lisa Faust, director of communications with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
On May 21, 2009, former Vice President Richard B. Cheney delivered a powerful address at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) that angered liberals with its praise for the way the Bush Administration handled the threat of terrorism and its challenge to President Obama to reveal the successes of "enhanced interrogation." Some are even demanding that those who recommended and approved the interrogations be prosecuted, in effect treating political disagreements as a punishable offense, and political opponents as criminals.\n Some of his defenders say the unseen memos are inconclusive, which only raises the question why they won't let the American people decide that for themselves.. . . Instead of idly debating which political opponents to prosecute and punish, our attention will retur...
Computer experts disagree about the significance of recent cyber attacks that shut down multiple government Web sites in the United States and South Korea during the Fourth of July weekend. Marty Lindner, a principal engineer at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute, would not comment specifically on the attacks but called them common -- and malicious.
NALCHIK, Russia - Militants launched simultaneous attacks on police and government buildings in this city in Russia's turbulent Caucasus region today, sparking battles involving heavy-arms fire that forced schools to evacuate and left corpses in the streets. Chechen rebels claimed responsibility for the attacks in Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkariya, a republic near Chechnya. The republic has suffered a growing wave of violence that apparently is connected to Islamic extremists and that is seen as a spillover of the Chechen rebels' decade-long fight against Russian forces.
The Associated Press BAGHDAD - A pair of suicide car bombings Sunday devastated the heart of Iraq's capital, killing at least 147 people in the country's deadliest attack in more than two years. The bombs targeted two government buildings and called into question Iraq's ability to protect its people as U.S. forces withdraw.
BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomb flattened a court building and an explosives-rigged ambulance blew down walls like dominos near the Finance Ministry during a wave of coordinated attacks Tuesday that targeted high-profile symbols of Iraqi authority. At least 127 people were killed. Two government institutions struck on Tuesday, the Finance Ministry and an appeals court, had only just relocated to new buildings after similar attacks destroyed their old offices in August and October.
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Ten years after the 9/11 attacks, government screening has made it harder for foreign students to enroll in civilian flight schools like a handful of the hijackers had done, banking on America being inviting and a place to learn quickly. But the most rigorous checks don't apply to all students and instructors, so schools and trainers have to be especially alert to weed out would-be terrorists.
In an attempt to censor a book about the war on terrorism, the government has handed terrorists a road map to information they should never see. The case also raises political questions regarding intelligence community efforts to keep critical information regarding the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks from the American people. Operation Dark Heart" is a memoir by Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, who was posted to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). His memoir relates his experiences as an intelligence officer in the war on terrorism. Like any writers whose work deals with highly classified information to which they gained access using a security clearance, Mr. Shaffer submitted the draft of his book for a security review. It was approved by the Army in January with some modest changes....
