Here's the good news: The stereoscopic cover concept for Tool's new CD, 10,000 Days, is clever, cool and original.
What you get is a series of vivid graphics and nightmarish images, which are given a holographic feel with the accompanying glasses. I can hear Tool fans now:

That same afternoon, Abraham Quintanilla allowed me to take some photographs of [Selena] in the backyard of my mother's Whittier Street home in Corpus Christi, Texas. Shortly thereafter, I became her publicist because I believed in her talent. Although she had just become a teenager, Selena had already recorded several 45 rpm records and a cassette for Freddie Records. In addition, she had recorded two singles for Cara Records. So my first action was to create her biography and discography.
As soon as Selena got dressed, she would get on a pay phone and call all her friends to remind them they were in town for a show. Once the show started, Abraham turned into their soundman as Selena's mother, [Chris, Abraham, Marcela], and A.B.'s first wife, Vangie, worked the lights.
I also had the p...

Back in the day, fans got their information about new music from family, friends, that cool new kid in class - and specialty magazines that arrived once or twice a month. Now the family, friends and cool new kids are still around, but there are a lot fewer music mags. News, reviews and angry screeds bounce across the Internet well before the next issue of Rolling Stone can lumber its way into the mailbox.
With that in mind, here are some of our favorite sites and blogs for sampling the state of pop music, ones that you can use to discover new sounds. We stayed away from sites whose "primary" goal is to sell you stuff (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) or were originally known in their print incarnations ("Spin").

Art and Music From the New York Underground By Paula Court Soul Jazz, 208 pp. $39.95 No Wave By Marc Masters Black Dog Publishing, 192pp. $29.95 It's tempting to mythologize the downtown NYC of the late 1970s and '80s as an insurgent "artopia," a rebel fronder of creative cross-pollination where money hadn't yet erected barriers to creativity. In front of the camera, however, there is only raucous energy, an animating spirit that threads together impromptu moments (such as a group of musicians and performance artists-Kim Gordon, Eric Bogosian, and Cindy Sherman among them-enjoying a pickup game of volleyball) with the more reflective (Laurie Anderson lost in contemplation as she tunes her white violin; dancer Bill T. Jones in mid-leap, defying gravity).

DAYTON -- At one time, Dayton's Memorial Hall was a mecca for Southern gospel music. In its heyday some of the most popular groups of the genre made regular stops at the 100 year-old venue.

Indie rock is more difficult to define in strictly musical terms, as it contains many subgenres that embrace rock music and other divergent styles equally.2 However, while independence from major labels is of fundamental importance to indie rock, this factor alone is not enough to fully describe the genre.3 Partly as a result of the impulse to remain independent of mainstream expectations, a distinct indie rock sound has developed.4 The hallmarks of this sound include: the careful balancing of pop accessibility with noise, playfulness in manipulating pop music formulae, sensitive lyrics masked by tonal abrasiveness and ironic posturing, a concern with "authenticity," and the cultivation of a "regular guy" (or girl) image. Alternative rock was ushered into the mainstream by bands like R...
