Come with me," said José María Tojeira, the Jesuits' Central America provincial. My colleagues, radio reporters, were already striding with their mics toward two clerics, one elderly and one very young, who stood gazing at the bundles. I followed Tojeira.
I felt a jolt. Tojeira's words told me he was uncertain whether he would live through the day. Jesuits, most notably Ellacuria, had had the ear of both sides in the civil war, from President Alfredo Cristiani of the right-wing ARENA party, to leftist FMLN commanders. The scholarpriests pushed for a negotiated, non-military solution. To radical rightists, this was intolerable. A call for "Death to Jesuits" had surfaced, along with threats to others in the atmosphere of war.

Brother Ali The Undisputed Truth (Rhymesayers)
Pick up nearly any hip-hop release today, and you will find the word featuring repeated frequently on the song list. Great rhymers often suffer from too many chefs in the kitchen, which is why Brother Ali's second full-length release is such a breath of funky- fresh air. Paired with producer Ant (Anthony Davis, one-half of hip- hop duo Atmosphere), Ali breaks away from the herd and offers one of the most refreshing solo urban albums on the market. Minneapolis isn't a hotbed of hip-hop royalty, but Ant has a way of sniffing out the area's best. As an albino -- and now a practicing Muslim -- growing up in parts of Minnesota and Michigan, Ali has learned to develop an appropriately thick skin. Thankfully, his lyrical lashings sound like a prod...

The pleasant weather and warm crowd reception kept the atmosphere light, fun and laid-back at the first-ever Bangor Symphony Orchestra concert on the Bangor Waterfront. The BSO performed with Yesterday, a national Beatles touring group, for about two hours, as the sun slowly set behind Main Street. Opening for the BSO and Yesterday was the Stone Doctors, a Rolling Stones cover band.
The show began with a medley of beloved Beatles melodies, with the BSO, conducted by Maestro Lucas Richman, sounding in fine form. The band took the stage in full Ed Sullivan-era costumes, and launched into the biggest hits of those early albums. The horn section for Got to Get You Into My Life sounded nice and punchy, and the audience singalong for She Loves You brought smiles to many faces.

Countless 'Radio Raheem" supporters cite him as being the Marvin Gaye of our era. When you experience the junior-double deluxe classic, you will hear progressive messages in tracks such as: Bulletproof (feat. Ludacris) and Nobody Wins A War (fear Jill Scott, Bilal, Anthom Hamilton, Ledisi, Algebra. Chrisette Michele and more); In the same breath, your soul's gratification will be captured by the sensual vocal vibrations of Garden of Love; Mr. Right and his current single I Don't Care.

* "We realized that a couple of the songs had the words 'space' or 'cosmos' or 'atmosphere,' and we thought, 'We can make this into a concept album,'" [Josh Moyer] says. At first, the record's space theme seems as clear-cut as the early theme albums of Johnny Cash or The Ventures. But Moyer explains, "It's hot a sci-fi album, though we use a lot of cosmic terms. It's about things that affect everyone.

We're talking to national distributors now. We haven't found the deal we want yet; we're trying to write our own ticket. ThaMuseMeant is based out of Portland now--they're kicking ass and taking names. They're six on and one off and they're on their third tour. They're our main national act. With Hundred Year Flood it's in smaller circles--they've got kids, so it's harder to do longer tours. Joe West just broke up his band; he's a solo act now, so we're not sure what his prospects are. We're also talking to some bands up in Colorado and San Francisco about coming out here and recording albums. Since we do everything analog and the rest of the world's gone digital, there's a lot of people interested in coming out here, 'cuz we get the fat tones that you don't get with digital. It's just ...
...It's just a great creative atmosphere. It's weird--we're getting a lot of response from ...

Jeff Townies as "D. J. Jazzy Jeff" and [Will Smith] as the "Fresh Prince," sold 8 million albums with their debut, "Big Willie Style." That album launched Smith's entertainment career, leading him to riches in television and movies.
Smith's new blockbuster, "I, Robot," which opens Friday, appears to be another blockbuster along the lines of Smith's previous top summer films, "Independence Day," "Men in Black" and Men in Black 2.
I, Robot" is directed by Alex, Proyas ("Dark City," "The Crow"), and provides 2035 Chicago with a distinctive atmosphere, complete with robots as plentiful as humans and slicker then their masters.

Speaking by phone during a break in rehearsals, the Quebec-born [Daniel Lanois], 54, is excited about beginning the 13-date tour, which includes a stop at Madison's Barrymore Theatre (Tuesday, Oct. 11,8 p.m.). "I'm looking forward to it," he says. "Sometimes just being thrown into a situation gets you out of your usual habits. That's a nice thing about us human beings - we are resourceful when we're challenged.
It's that promise of challenge, of spontaneity and invention, that has fans of progressive instrumental music salivating. The tour features an opening set by the always mesmerizing Tortoise; Lanois then joins the band to reinterpret and improvise on a set list comprising roughly half of his recent Belladonna CD, several older Lanois works and at least one brand-new piece - witti...

PAUL MOTIAN Time and Time Again (ECM) Drummer Paul Motian, saxophonist Joe Lovano, and guitarist Bill Frisell first played together on a quintet project back in 1981. They've made numerous trio albums in the decades since, and their musical communication is inarguably sophisticated. Here the gate opens hauntingly with "Cambodia," a Motian composition (like most on this CD). It features Frisell soundscapes, including backward guitar effects, over the drummer's delicate cymbal work. Tenorman Lovano joins just past the two-minute point, equally impressionistic. Next is the song "Wednesday," and I wish I had Wednesdays like this. It sounds so peaceful. The musicians create a rich, relaxed atmosphere of melodic and rhythmic textures and a great sense of space. The stew gets hot- sauced un pe...
