Concerning the recent killing that happened in historic downtown Redlands at a popular bar, and as someone who has frequented this area for years (until the shooting), I knew it was just a matter of time until something bad occurred due to the overall unsecure, dangerous atmosphere at the downtown Redlands bar scene - not just that one bar, but the numerous other nearby bars as well that are jampacked, shoulder to shoulder, drawing undesirables outside of Redlands. It's impossible to move without bumping into someone, worse, their date, accidentally spilling drinks, and the invariable outcome. This starts as early as 9 p.m. The bars use dangerous, unsecured, pitch-black parking lots and back alleys as entrance and exit ways.

While not everybody knew my name, I was definitely glad I came to Cheers. The Napa Grill recently opened in Westlake Village (no connection to the Napa Valley Grille in Westwood) in the former Piatti restaurant space. With its warm, welcoming atmosphere (partially remodeled with new furniture, lighting fixtures, wood ceiling, granite bar and kitchen) and upscale eclectic menu, it's worth a visit. There's lots to like here. On a recent Saturday evening it was packed. Be sure to make a reservation on a weekend night if you have your heart set on prime-time dining.
